Live and learn.

His puck possession body positioning; cuts to find space, angles he takes on opposition bodies when he moves. That part of his game is truly elite I think he got that from his dad bc is abnormally really really elite how he does it without thinking smoothly and spontaneously he literally will move into angling off defender while finding space with the puck. Obviously his base is strong and technically elite. Smart and safe no one is ever in a position to lay a big hit on him from what I saw. His got tools others dont definitely hof potential like hella. On puck is stellar, off puck instincts and smarts are tops love pressure and quick disruption does not have A+ skating or unreal speed but he’s a tank type more than roadrunner type fs

He lacks strenght a lot and he may not be as good offensively as I first thought, but I do believe that if he had played in the CHL this year, the public discussion around him would have been much more positive. I'm gonna stay interessted in his developpment for sure.

Found you only a few days ago but i’ve now seen all your videos and read your 23 and 24 rankings. You have instantly become one of my favourite scouts to read from. Your very mature approach to actually ranking what you see and not just ranking people where others do is very refreshing. You value a player's ability to actually play hockey and play effectively in their role. Your reasoning on Carlsson last year over Fantilli was something I also felt all year. I was always wondering why Fantilli just became “the clear #2 pick” when Leo to me was the better player. This year you’ve done it again with Silayev. Silayev might not be the flashy sexy pick for teams, but players like him are what you need come playoffs. I don’t understand how people think it is a bad thing that he “just has 11p in 63gp” in the KHL as a first pairing 17 year old. Do you think comparing Silayev to Sider is a bad idea? Both physically gifted defensemen who lacked good production vs men their draft years. A shame we can’t see Silayev play versus his own age group and see how he does there. I am not saying I think Silayev will be as good as Sider in a 2-way game but the comparison on draft day does make some sense to me. Very good article you’ve done and I look forward to anything else you make. Do you have a discord or something? Talking about prospects is something I always enjoy. Thanks for another excellent video, Simon. This might be a bit of a far out comparison, but some of the ways he handles the puck reminds me of Peter Mahovlich. Similar big, gangly body with limbs going every which way, yet exhibiting great skill that is near impossible to defend because he seems to make things up in the spur of the moment. Peter was bigger than Sennecke, but the latter might put on another inch or two.

@SimonSt-L-Scouting
@SimonSt-L-Scouting 5 ай бұрын
Excellente question !

If you look to his U20 season, he showed a lot of skills, beetween the leg, deke players and everything. He's really skilled. He gained 31 ranks to finish 18th on the final CSS ranking, wich is huge to rise so much in those ranks. The only problem, he bend too much forward when skating, his forward stride is too short, whitout forward stride he cannot reach full speed, can accelerate well but miss high speed. He's a legetimate end of first after this year ''big twenty'', a kind of Eriksson Ek type of player.

Great video as always, and this has helped me warm up to him. Looking at the footage here, his skating, passing and retrievals all make me feel like you're at least talking about a NHL defenseman, and the offensive upside will show whether that can be at a top 4 role or not. I do feel like Freij has suffered a bit with Wallenius being in the same draft, whenever people raise Wallenius it seems like Freij will always fall. Any thoughts on Wallenius for now, or do you have a video coming on him? I think I've seen somewhere either here or on Twitter that you will be publishing a ranking before the draft, do you have a date on when that will be posted? And do you think you have the time/ability to put out a video on Solberg before the draft? He's a prospect on the rise, so I'm quite interested in what he might be.

Smart and skilled but Skating is an issue and I think he plays soft. In the WHL he's really good near the net to either feed his teammates or try creative plays to beat the goaltender but there is no way in hell that he's gonna be able to sustain the physicality in this area at the NHL level.

@@SimonSt-L-ScoutingI understand that concern - did you every scout Wyatt Johnston before he was drafted/made it to the NHL?

This video made me warm up to him more. Every game I have watched him in I left disappointed because he kept getting beat by far worse skaters, or left them way more room than he needs to, because he's too lackadaisical when the puck is far away from him. That combined with him throwing caution to the wind and make so many high risk plays makes me think he doesn't mind losing, even in national team games, and that's a really tough character flaw for me to look past. But this video helped remind me that he has so many good qualities, so with some great coaching/mentoring I'm sure he can become a really successful NHL defenseman.

I feel like Connelly is this years Danila Yurov in the draft. The guy has top 10 talent but will fall to the late 1st or early second.

I get what you're saying, but I think their case are vastly different. So are the players. A guy in this year draft has had very similar statistic to Yurov in the last 2 years in Russia ; Igor Chernyshov.
