Thank you for giving us such a professional landscape design education. When I first saw your main entrance to your home in the backyard, I was quite surprised! But later on you did mention that it is an unusual design. You really showed us that how YOU are going to use/enjoy YOUR space is what's important rather than just following a traditional way of doing things. You are an excellent teacher. Oh, and I enjoy Chip but Brandon is the professional 😊

I have tried to seed my lawn but I am having difficulties. I live in Michigan and my soil test came back stating that I am high on potassium and phosphates. I'm very low on nitrogen so I am planning on spreading Milorgainte and re-seeding. You also said to lay down 1/8" of topping, can you explain what I should use for this? Thank you for any response you can give me. Bob

A basic soil test is available from Dellavalle Soil Lab and sometimes that information is useful. You would need to sample it yourself and take it to them. There is no where locally that can measure soil life.

Would you apply this when overseeding? And if so, would you apply it after the seed, then top soil on all of it? Thank you!

Yes! We recommend using Blend & Penetrate when overseeding. They both help with germination. Apply seed, then apply products, then top dressing.

I bought a house with neglected lawn. I didnt realize just how much weed and thatch it had until well into sunmer. I was a little aggressive and now i have a dead lawn but i did overseed recently. I derhatched and used a core aerator. Its been such a long dry summer. I see it germinating in shaded areas but the heat stressed areas and where i aggressively dethatched its still very brown but hoping it comes through. We got our first heavy rainfall today in quite some time. We really need the rain

I live in Henderson, NV (Las Vegas basically) - Long fescue. Bought a house and previous owner didn't take care of the lawn. We have some bare spots front and back. I want to overseed right now (September) and will run the sprinklers frequently throughout the day. Most of the front lawn is shaded by a big African Sumac, should I put a cover over the rest of it so it's constantly shaded in the entire area to promote growth? I was going to overseed, put some top dressing on, and maybe some mulch or straw to keep moisture in. Thoughts?

In Southern California, Marathon grass is very popular and I had it installed in my front yard about one year ago. Can you tell me what type of grass it is? I hear about rye, fescue and others but I don’t know much about Marathon. Thank you
@catherinebailey2131
@catherinebailey2131 9 күн бұрын
I also live in SoCal. Marathon is the brand name for a type of Tall Fescue grass that is popular because it is green all year, has an extensively deep root system that allows it to grow well in our climate, and uses less water compared to other grass varieties. There are three types - Marathon I, II, and III, representing progressive improvements to the sod. Growers recommend cutting Marathon I at a height of 2 to 3 inches, Marathon II at a height of 1 1/2 to 2 inches and Marathon III at a height of 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches. You can contact the company that installed it (or it may be on your invoice) to see which type you have.

Everything that I have seen and read by you makes a lot of sense. I’m in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and I am dealing with Bermuda grass with a fungus issue, the challenge is addressing the watering in the heat of the summer and utilizing quality products as you offer, but being in a fixed income situation and needing to be as economical as possible. I’m not sure there is an answer to my dilemma, but I appreciate the wisdom shared in your videos. Thanks.

With lawn fungus, sometimes you must bring out the big guns and use a chemical fungicide to control the disease. Organic methods don't always help. In the off-season, the key is to build the soil up with natural beneficial nutrients and fungi to help fight the fungicide during the peak season. If you have an infection in your body, sometimes the doctor recommends a specific medication to cure the illness, and then afterward, you replenish your body with natural nutrients.

We removed our lawn eight years ago, and I have no regrets. The water cost, the mowing, the fertilizing, the weeding and dethatching was too much work for the amount of pleasure we got from it. We put in patios and low water use plants that are beautiful and I regularly hear compliments on it. I enjoy my garden much more now.

What is your experience with zoysia grass? I live in Central Oklahoma, hot dry summers. Front yard is overshadowed by a large oak tree which is now dropping acorns. What little grass there is is tall fescue. Since it doesn't spread, there are many bare spots. So that's why I'm wondering if another grass might be better.

what about over seeding a lawn with existing fungus? I treated with hose end fungicide a few days ago but am planning on overseeding a few days. Will this halt germination and growth?
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 15 күн бұрын
Overseeding is fine on top of fungal disease and/or on top of treated fungal disease. Because of this year's fungal disease, in Late Fall I recommend applying our Soil Optimizer at 3-5lbs per 1,000sqft and then next Spring apply our "Blend" at 15-20lbs per 1,000sqft and our Penetrate Liquid Biotiller at 8oz per 1,000sqft.

You're welcome - we love when things come together at the perfect time! Penetrate is a great way to start improving clay soil. Like the video states, growing something in the soil alongside amendments is more effective than just using Penetrate alone.

How do you deal with hard pan or hard, thick clay to rejuvenate your lawn?
@JohnandBobs
@JohnandBobs 16 күн бұрын
We actually just put out a video about hard clay soil if you want to check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5ybZYZqo5mKm68 The biggest thing to watch with clay soil is watering/drainage. Check with a soil probe regularly to determine how much/often to water. Otherwise, follow the advice from this video and work on infusing your soil with beneficial soil life using compost, our products, or products similar to ours.

Hi John! I live in Long Island NY and have already used your overseeding program/products in the Spring of this past year. Now that we are heading into the fall would you recommend the same method with both Blend & Penetrate for spot seeding or something different? I have some bare spots where clover was trying to take over that i took out by hand. Thank you!

In a dense flower garden, can I add sulfur on top of the soil then dress compost over the garden in between plants? Or does the sulfur and compost need to be cultivated into the top of the soil?

I grew up in a modern Eichler house that had an enclosed courtyard situated in front of the main entrance. Basically we had 2 front doors. I’m trying to incorporate the concept to my current home.
