Great Interview! GREAT Book! Mental Illness Is VERY Complex! As Are The Dynamics Of Large Families! But Remember - Not Every Person Who Is Homeless Is Mentally Ill - Or A Drug User....& Not Every Person Who Uses Drugs - Including Alcohol! - Or Other Chemicals That Were Not Prescribed Under Medical Care Is "Homeless" Or On The Streets... Unfortunately - Military Veterans Make Up A Large Part Of The Homeless Population - & Their Drug Use & Abuse Often Is Caused By Their Military Service, As Is Their Distrust Of Getting Proper Medical Care From The Government Promised Them Before Their Service....

I love books and the magic of them. I enjoyed getting a peek into the world of booksellers. It is much like the art world. The only things that felt off to me was the inserting of odd wokeness toward the end. They mention how all these men are in the business, almost mocking it. Well, that was the reality years ago. Then the black girl collecting Hip Hop memorabilia was enthusiastic but it felt out of place for a book documentary.... Will collectors be breathlessly collecting a rapper interview from a hip hop magazine about the birth of gangsta rap with the same drive as those seeking Shakespeare? Probably not. Music is a different category in my mind. I enjoyed Ken Burn's film work on the history of Jazz. Then the notion that more black people need to be brought into the field was kind of wacky. People who love books are of all races, ages, etc... We live in a country where only 10% of the population is black. A good number of them are not interested in reading. It's like the idea that more women need to be engineers, astronauts.... We need equity, heaven to Betsy or civilization will fall apart or not be progressive enough. It has to look at certain way blah blah blah. Why isn't it, blah blah blah??? This is all woke social engineering propaganda. Billionaire rappers like Jay Z and Rhianna are probably not losing sleep every night wondering, where aren't more white performers rapping? Why aren't more white men in professional basketball and football? Oh, heaven to Betsy... civilization will fall if more whites don't participate in every aspect black culture. What will become of us.... 🤣 If the booksellers are so eager to help the black community then assist the Baltimore school system which has blown away billions of dollars to uplift people of color only to find their culture is different. They don't value scholarship to the same degree and it can't be forced on them. Test scores have not improved. Being a white savior is not needed. Other than that, I enjoyed the film.

I appreciate how the history of blaming the mothers for any dysfunction in a family was talked about and addressed.

A happy "accident" via an article in Artforum, led me scrolling around, searching and although I didn't find the artist I was after I found your channel! Joyce Carol Oates is a favorite of mine. I am always in awe of how prolific she is- she teaches too, doesn't she? I won't live long enough to read everything she's written! nor could I afford to collect her oeuvre- if I value a writer I prefer to own a book so I can make marginalia without penalty and have the pleasure of rereading whenever. Ms. Oates' imagination is staggering, pardon such a tawdry cliche. I wanted to be a writer as a kid, it was all I thought of, but...no talent, lack of intellect and imagination- I buy into "writers are born not made"- maybe I am wrong...Ms. Oates is able to write in any genre and with seeming ease but still manages to be a "writer's writer" - my personal choice when I read. Thank you Ms. Oates for allowing a chronic depressive, frustrated, too poor to travel to learn about this world- I majored in art history so travel became a necessity! But life never runs along the roads we long to walk....Thank you for allowing me into those places ....Namaste from a Fan from Canada

This was lots of fun and we so enjoyed meeting such great and gifted people at SpenserTown Academy. My only dissappointment with this show was the recorded sound quality didn't come out quite right. Always difficult to manage in live settings. Besides that, SpenserTown Academy is the place to check out - phenominal performance space that has to be seen and heard. The renovations to the building are remarkable and you can tell there is tremendous community support for this venue. The support and dedication of the board and volunteers to local artists is really commendable. We were honored to be a part of this performance and look forward to checking out other shows at the Academy. Thank you so much!!

I'm hoping that as the KZbin AI cranks through the compression, it fixes itself. The Live audio was so much better!
