The “Improperia” (“Reproaches”) is a poignant chant featured in some Christian traditions, most notably Catholic, during Good Friday services. The chant is structured as a series of reflections where Jesus addresses humanity with poignant questions about its failings. It begins with the Latin phrase “Popule meus, quid feci tibi? Aut in quo contristavi te? Responde mihi.” In English, this is often translated as: “My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me.” While originating in the Christian tradition, the universal themes of reflection, remorse, and reconciliation speak to us all. -Exactly You

Thank you. I can't find the exact quote but this reminds me of something Thich Nhat Hanh wrote along the lines of "If we want to change the government, we need to pay attention to how we use toilet paper." What we plant and how we plant it, what we bring to the things we do...it all matters. Love and appreciation, -Exactly You

This new cover of "Night-Blooming Jasmine" reflects my ongoing commitment as a white American musician to honor Black music and especially Black vocal traditions by refraining from appropriation. What I’ve come to realize in working on this track is just how deeply all musical genres and styles, as they exist today, owe their richness and innovation to the global Black community. Striving to completely erase appropriation is neither possible nor truly respectful. What *is* possible-and essential-is to actively minimize appropriation and to credit, credit, credit the Black community for shaping music into what it is. We are all indebted to the staggering talent, creativity, and resilience of the Black community. Let’s pay that forward by keeping the appreciation, remembering, and respect flowing. #BlackMusicMatters #AmplifyBlackVoices #RespectBlackCulture #CreditBlackArtists #CreditBlackMusic Thank you for listening. ❤💛❤💛❤

To give just a little context: This music and video are not intended as humor, nor as disrespect. The video is not intended to portray romantic love, nor marriage. It is not making fun of anyone. The real love and intimacy that's possible when we're open to it is painful, uncomfortable. This music and the video push some of those buttons, but not with malice, not jokingly, not by being "against." Love in this sense can feel like fake news-we want to run out the room rather than let our guard down. But it is also wondrous...really *really* wondrous. Thank you for listening and for giving this experiment in raw openness a chance. There's room for all kinds of reactions; wherever you are with this, you're okay, it's okay. #reallove

Acknowledgement: I want to openly share a reflection on my creative process. In composing my vocal works, I have used both traditional and AI-assisted techniques, drawing from an eclectic mix of vocal styles to tell stories and amplify the emotional impact of the lyrics. This has included incorporating Black American vocal styles, such as the smooth jazz-inspired 80s vocals featured in "Night-Blooming Jasmine." As a white male American creator, I have come to recognize the complexities and harm that can arise when privileged artists, like myself, utilize the sounds of marginalized communities. After deeper reflection, I have decided to refrain from using AI-generated Black vocals in my work moving forward. I feel it is an important step in respecting the voices, artistry, and immeasurable cultural contributions of the Black community worldwide. I have chosen to leave "Night-Blooming Jasmine" up on KZbin. While I understand this may be an imperfect way forward, I feel taking it down would disregard listeners who may find empowerment or resonance in its message. I remain deeply open to dialogue and feedback on how white creators can more meaningfully support and uplift the Black community. I also commit to seeking opportunities to honor and pay forward any success this song might receive, fully recognizing that its beauty and impact are indebted to a tradition born of a community often harmed by the carelessness of creators like me. This is part of my ongoing commitment to "walk the walk"-to listen, learn, and grow in ways that build solidarity and respect. Thank you, sincerely, for listening, supporting, and being part of this journey as a community of true friends.
