SCREW THE MIRAGE DRIVE!!!! If you're in 50 degree water like I was yesterday, getting out of it is priority NUMBER ONE!!
@abcolburnt310 ай бұрын
I agree with you 100% completely! If you are near land or can stand up in shallow water, that is obviously the best route to go. If you are in a body of water that is not near land, then this option is most likely the best option to go. Also, if you are fishing offshore and flip out in cold water, the only thing you have is to get back in the kayak. That is why I offer this video to show people a way to get back in their kayak.

I had that same idea for launching and recovering off the rocks
@abcolburnt35 жыл бұрын
Ah, cool. I have never tried to use this method for launching off of rocks and recovering. The locations I launch from are either boat launches or the beach through the surf. If I boat launch it, I treat it as if it's a boat and back the trailer down in the water and push the TI off of the trailer. I have a rope tied to the handle so that I can pull it back to me once the car is moved. I use the method I have showed in the video for all other ways of getting the TI onto the trailer (particularly at the beach).

Hi Yakety! How do you feel about the Raptor now after owning it for awhile? Did you find it suitable for offshore?
@abcolburnt35 жыл бұрын
Alan, I don't own this kayak anymore. This is not because I didn't like it but because in order to get another kayak, I needed the money from selling this one to purchase the other one. My original plan was to keep the Raptor and to buy the other kayak but at the time that just wasn't possible. I am considering on buying another Raptor (exactly the same setup as you see in my video). To answer your question though, I have taken the Raptor offshore many times. It does fantastic offshore. I would not hesitate to take it offshore again if I had another one. It's fantastic for any type of fishing, including offshore! Feel free to hit me up if you have more questions. I'm always happy to talk about kayaking with anyone. 832-588-7091 If you happen to be in the Texas region or nearby, you may want to consider the outing I put together for offshore kayak fishing. It's an outing that I put together 6 years ago to help new kayakers on the water that have either never done it before or only been out a few times but still trying to get the hang of things. I have all levels of kayakers at this outing, beginner, intermediate, and experts. If you go to www.texaskayakfisherman.com and scroll to the BTB (Beyond the Breakers) section, click on it. Next, you will see my thread at the very top. It talks about Bob Hall Pier. That is where we launch. The rig is around a mile or less to get to. Many times we are catching peligic fish before we even get to the rig. As long as conditions or weather don't make it where I have to change weekends, we will have around 100 kayakers show up. The outing will take place on June 8th. Check out the details on the site. Give me a call if you have any additional questions. I'm always happy to chat.

Hey, Blake, thanks for sharing your video! Only one question: do the back edges of the top rings on of the 45 degree connector scratch the bottom of your TI? Some friction is suggested by those dark lines on the backward-looking edges of the top ring, visible in the video. Or is that just dirt? I must say, very cool contraption! Cheers
@abcolburnt36 жыл бұрын
Carlos, I didn't realize what you mentioned until you said something. I believe that is from the yak getting dirty when I was testing it out at my boat storage.
@abcolburnt35 жыл бұрын
The bottom of the TI that is white is from the rubbing along the PVC (which was done before purchasing the wench). Any dark looks is from dirt and such. There will be some scuffing I'm sure along the bottom when it goes along the bend but something you can do to take care of that is that when it's at the top, pull down and then it will ride flat.

Those kayaks were practically empty. Most kayak anglers tend to have a lot of gear that would get in the way. Man, you guys need to load those kayaks up and be in a deeper pool and try to get back in. Just saying, 🤔
@abcolburnt36 жыл бұрын
KFS 486, I have done this method in my kayak out in the Gulf with gear fully loaded. I'm not going all the way out just to make a video to get all my rods/reels full of salt and then have to go and clean them. I have had to do this method a few times, not by choice (lol), and the results are just the same as you see in the video. One day I will have my GoPro running when this happens and when that happens, I will post up to show the results. Until then, the video I have posted will have to suffice. I will say that for the method I have provided it will have 100% success for any kayak (make sure the yak has a handle on the side or something that you can wrap your strap around), why not give it a try. You may already have a strap laying around the place and worst case scenario is that you go and buy a strap for give/take $10.00. That's a very cheap price for a very good safety measure to be taken while out on the water. KFS 486, if you live in the Houston, TX region, feel free to give me a call and we can go out to the freshwater (where the salt won't destroy things) and I will be happy to show you this method in person. Afterwards, we can go fishing (salt or fresh, your choice). 832-588-7091. Thanks for your time in posting and tight lines!! :)

Keep a length of paracord with a gated carabiner in your PFD pocket. Yak flips over just clip the biner on a rail and toss the cord over the hull. Go to the other side and pull it over. Doesn't get any easier
@abcolburnt37 жыл бұрын
gblan, thanks for posting. What you have just mentioned is pretty much what I have demonstrated in my video. The only difference is that you are using paracord and I am using a strap. I might go a step further and say that if you use paracord while out on the water and your hands are wet, that could give you a nasty rope burn. A strap, such as the one I have, will not or is less likely to give rope burn. If you don't end up with rope burn, that's awesome! Knowing my hands, I would. Some people are pretty resilient but my hands aren't. Thanks for posting and adding on to the discussion. If you are in the Texas region, hit me up sometimes and let's do some fishing. this is the only video I can find on flipping a PA.. How much water did it take in?
@abcolburnt38 жыл бұрын
J.T Fishing.... the PA took on water but it wasn't anything that a bilge pump couldn't handle. There is a way to make sure that water doesn't get in to your yak. The water managed its way in through the front hatch. What you can do is go to Home Depot and get some 3M weather sealing tape. Place that under the hatch and that will prevent further leaks. I have this on my Outback and it works great. Feel free to text me and I can send you the info via text of which 3M tape I have. My yak stays in my storage and I don't have the info right in front of me. I will be happy to check it out later in the week when I head up there to get the yak to go fish and I can send you the UPC for the tape. 832-588-7091 Tight lines!!
@ChiCityYaker7 жыл бұрын
Solid demonstration man. One of the few I've seen with a PA too. I'm interested in seeing how you modified that front hatch to seal it better. My real fear being a PA owner is the water intake from the front hatch. I had an Outback that I flipped on Lake Michigan on its maiden voyage and it took on gallons of water...so much that the back end was damn near submerged in the water as I paddled back. Anyway, the front hatches is by far the weak link in both the Outback and PA.

Did you even read all messages written below? I've done this in rough conditions out in the ocean before (not intentional). I wonder how you can post something like this if you haven't even tried the method I have demonstrated. Why would anyone want to make a video in bad conditions intentionally only to risk inuring themselves? If you did try the method in the video, you would know that the method does work instead of posting up something such as what you have written. It's one thing to be out fishing offshore and conditions are predicted to be good only for some reason they go south, but to go out knowing conditions are bad just to make a video is not smart at all. However, your remark "useless in actual, waist of time" implies that you would want someone to go out in bad conditions to make this video and risk their life. If you feel this video is a waist of time, please get in touch with me. I will be happy to invite you out on a trip and show you how this does work. My email is [email protected] Email me with your contact info. When you are in Texas, let's get together and fish. I'll be happy to demonstrate while out on the water offshore. The last thing in the world I would want is someone to get injured or worse drowned testing this out. My deal if you want to call it that is the difficulty in flipping a one of the heaviest kayak they make upright in a swimming pool compared to trying to do this in a nasty angry ocean is so far from real world. Now I read OH sure glad I had a bilge pump Oh great what if the battery is shorted out from the water inside Oh I forgot the bucket its at the beach, now I am taking on water. Ya I know the battery is in a water proof container you hope....better be sure about that. Guys go out in rough conditions all the time but flipping any kayak in an angry pissed off ocean in windy conditions can be extremely difficult and exhausting not to mention hypothermia in the pacific north west that water will kick your hiney all the way back to the beach. Our water is not 80 degrees our is 49 to 52 degrees. I guess my thought is people new to kayaking to think it's so easy to flip upright any kayak let alone one the heaviest they make in rough conditions.
@abcolburnt36 жыл бұрын
@@dkat1108 I hear what you are saying but in the first part of what you are saying in your remarks, it sounds like you are trying to knock the video but you provide no alternatives. At least I have tried to give people an idea of something to try. I have used this method in rough conditions and even in bad surf. The method works. I only tried to flip the kayak in the surf once when I had a quick opportunity to do so. From that point, I was able to hold on and ride the surf back to the beach. I don't recommend to anyone to try and upright a kayak in the surf. I usually don't but that one time I decided to give it a go. Keep in mind though that I am experienced. Newer kayakers shouldn't try to upright a kayak in the surf. The one thing I can say for sure is that when I do go out offshore, I travel in numbers. My rule is that safety is in numbers (When all else fails, use the buddy system to get you back in your kayak or to safety.). The only reason I made this video is because I had heard so many people previously say that it was virtually impossible to flip a PA right side up once it has been flipped over. I wanted to convey that this is not the case. Other heavy kayaks are just as tough as the PA to turn back over but depending on conditions you face while out on the water and experience, that will determine whether you will have an easy or rough time with flipping the kayak back over. With a buddy system, this becomes even easier. D Kat..... if you do get to Texas, let's talk more on this but while we hit the water fishing. I'd be happy to discuss more on the matter. Have a Happy upcoming Thanksgiving!! :)

Actually, I just did this past weekend. I am not new to BTB (beyond the breakers) kayak fishing. This is not something I posted without testing it first. I competed at the Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas this past weekend. This is the first year EKFT came to Texas. The surf and swells were not good to say the least. Any one of the eighty something kayakers that were there can vouch for that. I had turtled and had to utilize this same method I have posted in my video. If you have ever fished in Texas Gulf coast waters, you can relate to how quick the waters can change. I dealt with this many times. The early part of the day can start off well but as the day progresses, things can change with no warning and it wasn't even predicted either. Knowing that, you can see how something in my video can be beneficial. I have traveled in my Hobie Outback not just a mile past the surf but I have been up to 8 miles offshore. It's not easy to do going that far out but in a Hobie, the mirage drive makes it much easier. I used to paddle out that far but now I am not nearly as tired because of the mirage drive which is one of the many reasons I have changed to a Hobie kayak. I am sorry you disagree with my video. For you to call it BS is extremely unprofessional. If you have truly been out BTB kayak fishing, you would know that the method I have provided is a much better solution to just doing nothing and the method provided on the video makes things easier. Since you don't approve, I'm guessing you have a better solution? I would love to hear it as I am always up for hearing new or other methods of re-entry on to the kayak after being tossed off. If you are ever in the Texas region and would like to join up for some fishing, hit me up. I'd love to hook up and fish with you. Also, I would be happy to demonstrate the steps in my video if similar conditions exist as you mentioned in your statement. Until then, tight lines!

Great video Blake. Thanks for the time you invested in creating this. Perhaps you could do another showing how to recover from the side of a PA. I'm sure I'm not the only one with rod holders/crate/cooler behind the seat in the well which would prevent you from coming from the back up to the seat. Thanks again, great video.
@abcolburnt38 жыл бұрын
Brian, you can apply the same concept with the strap when flipping the PA over for getting back on the PA on the side. After righting the PA, throw the strap across to the other side. Next, use the strap to pull yourself up and over onto the kayak. Because the PA sits high with the H-rail, it's not as easy to get up from the side, however, it can be done. Another method that you can apply is at the end of your strap, make sure you loop it so that you can place a foot inside of the loop (using the loop as a ladder). Once you place your foot in the loop, grab the H-rail with your hands. As you straighten your leg, lock your arms like you are getting out of a swimming pool. Make sure that your free leg is to the front side and with this leg, use it to re-enter the PA. From this point, you are back in the kayak with very little effort. If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to post on here or email me. [email protected] I will be happy to email my number and we can chat via phone or by email. Thanks for watching the video and thanks for your comment. I look forward to talking with you.

@abcolburnt38 жыл бұрын
carlos 1.... I am not sure what you meant by "install to the kayak." I thought that was covered in the video. Please feel free to contact me for any clarification as I don't mind chatting on things. 832-588-7091 Also, when using a TI or AI (tandem island or adventure island), you don't really paddle these. The AI/TI are wind propelled via the sail. If the wind slows down, you can use the mirage drives that come with these kayaks. If you have to use the paddle(s) for this particular yak (of which I have never needed to do unless the circumstances become extreme), the back seat is completely open for paddle navigation. If the front passenger needs to paddle, you can simply loosen the ropes off the rear akas and fold/tie to the front making things accessible for a front person to paddle. I've never even needed the front person to paddle though. I've never had a need for using the paddles ever on the AI/TI. Give me a call sometimes and let's talk. I will be happy to answer any questions you might have or you can contact racedaytramps and talk with them for additional info. Tight lines!

Check my SC Raptor mods video and look at the PVC support rack I came up with. You could easily use that same bag if you make a rack similar to mine. Built mine to elevate the basket and make a net on the back for my backpack or a long fish bag.

large HD Milk crate is far superior to that bag. I understand people want to steer away from the "norm" but there is a reason they are so widespread.... They just work. You thinking about anchor trolley? I'm going to purchase this yak just wish they still had rear hatches.
@abcolburnt35 жыл бұрын
The only reason I don't need a milk crate is that I can't fit a 50" king in one. The fish bag I have in my video fits one just fine and keeps ice to insult the fish from going bad from the outside heat. I keep all my gear and lures in the tackle pod between my legs. That's what that was made for and it's perfect for all my gear, a very convenient location and feature Santa Cruz put on the yak that is beneficial. In my video, I show a anchor trolley. I love anchor trolleys. I have one on all my kayaks except my Hobie Tandem Island. In regards to the rear hatches, I hear ya. I will tell ya though you can still buy those hatches through the local kayaking retailer. In the past when I got mine, I called ACK (Austin, Canoe & Kayak) and had them shipped to my place. Those smaller hatches are standard for most kayaks from what I was told back then.
