12:00 distance you can reach is based on how far it is from your head. When you were on top of the wall, you were 1 block higher (because of your legs) If you press F3 and B at the same time, this shows hitboxes. Press F5 to change your POV to third person. There's a red line around your head. You can place / break blocks up to 5 blocks from that line.
