I loved watching Twisted Translations when I was younger and sometimes I rematch the videos.. its nice hearing Gradually Watermelon again it was almost like a meme of that channel I remember it was on merch and everything Its nice to see someone referencing it after such a long time and the game does go well with it 🙂

I'm from Serbia and Bulgarian seems very easy, there are a lot of the same words. The grammar is much easier than Serbian. Do you have any tips for me because our languages are similar. 🇷🇸🇧🇬 ❤

Здраво! Yes, I imagine Bulgarian grammar is easier because of the lack of cases! One day we would love to do a video comparing Bulgarian and Serbian (feel free to let us know if you know Serbian KZbinrs that might want to join us). Here are a couple of tips from my experience: beware of false friends (some can be amusing though; I had a visiting Serbian friend order a “veliko” coffee - “veliko” means “great”, “glorious” and not “big” in Bulgarian); also, focus on the easy vocabulary - I think that everyday words and expressions are more likely to differ than higher-level or more professional/literary ones.

Hello! Usually it is once candidates pass a written exam that they are invited to an interview. But in some cases the department is already almost certain to accept the student, and I guess your case is like that, which is great! I think it won’t be hard - maybe practice introducing yourself, your research interests (as concretely as possible, such as recent articles/books you’ve read), and your career goals. I didn’t try passing the exam again; I continued as a research student until the established period was over, and then I moved onto something different (PhD in France).

Italian native speaker here. We have some of those names: An old and uncommon name is Camelia. Another old and uncommon name is Gelsomina (Jasmine). It sounds like a name that an 85yo old lady can have. Kinda spread is the name Rosa, which is also the name of the flower and the colour pink. Fiorella is the correspondent of Tsveteline. Fiorella --> fiore (flower). Internet says that the name Lilia exists also in Italian, but I've never met anyone with that name, while Liliana is more spread. Margherita is a common name, and it is also the name of the daisy Violetta and viola exist, as well. Both can be used to address also the flower and the colour. We have nothing similar to Iva, besides Ivana, which I assume to be the feminine of the name Ivan Thank you for the great job you're doing with this channel

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I would have assumed that "Viola" came from the musical instrument, but the flower/colour definitely makes more sense. Yes, weirdly enough, Iva and Ivan are not related - "Iva" is a plant and "Ivan" is the Slavic equivalent of John (although I have a friend who is called Iva but specifically named after her grandfather Ivan, so she doesn't celebrate her Name day on Цветница but on Ивановден).

@@Monoglossia I'm not really sure about the musical instrument because if that was true, we still wouldn't have any other name after a musical instrument, so it would be strangely specific. So nice to know that the same name can be celebrated on different dates based on the etymology that parents thought about.

"A ti?" = and you? I imagined it would be "i ti?", I remembered that и (i) means "and". Is "a" used as "and" in any other context?

I suggest you imagine it not as 'and' but as 'as for (me)' or 'on the other hand'. It's usually used when there's some kind of contrast e.g. 'аз съм българка, а мъжът ми е французин' - 'I am Bulgarian and (on the other hand) my husband if French'.

In Romanian we have the vowels a, ă (like in "ago"), and â (I don't know the equivalent in English, I'd describe it as the sound one makes when accidentally getting hit in the stomach 😄) I don't see the distinction between these 2 last vowel in Bulgarian, and you (/the girl in this clip) pronounced ъ as â one time, and as ă ("ago") other times. If I understand correctly, its pronounced as â (the stomach pressure sound which I said doesn't have English equivalent). Its not the ă sound as in "ago" or "but". In fact this vowel ă ("ago") isn't "nominally" present in the alphabet, but rather used as an inflection "here and there" (not sure where..)? I imagined that ъ and ь would address these 2 separate/distinct vowels. Anyways, for a Romanian, its fun to learn Bulgarian bc every 2 sentences we have a common word. I learned 2 days (this weekend) and already I understand many sentences, when written that is.. Spoken Bulgarian (by natives).. I'm far from understanding.. PS. It's a bit of a mystery the amount of verbs that translate to "to leave" or "to go". Like тръгвам, напусцам, отивам, заминавам, хо́дя. PS2. About word благодаря (blagodarya).. You pronounce it bogudaria. Is is ever pronounced the way its written? When I remember words I make associations, and I know bogu has to do with god. Now, if you say blago(daria) then I think of the (common) Romanian word blagoslovi (to bless). This makes more sense in this context. There's also a word blodogori which means to keep criticizing or keep mumbling (speaking).

My guess would be the following: а is the equivalent of the Romanian ă and ъ - of the Romanian â. ь does not make a sound of its own, it's just used in a couple of sound combinations. However, when they are not under stress, а and ъ might sound practically the same (that's why you've heard ъ pronounced as both ă and â on different occasions); in fact, native Bulgarian speakers often get them wrong. As for the many words that mean 'to leave/to go/to get going/...', yes, this is definitely something specific to Bulgarian. I think it's a bit worse in Russian, though! I think the reason благодаря sounds in this way to you is because the L sound is much less soft than let's say in English; it's a bit like a w. You're absolutely right that благодаря and благославям have the same root - благ, which means 'nice, kind'. Благо + даря = to give kindness. Благо + славям = to speak kindness. So, while they do not directly come from the word Бог, it's still a valid association, I guess, in terms of a wider lexical field. I bet that the links between Romanian and Bulgarian are a very interesting topic. Also, they seem to say that being fluent in Buglarian and French would make Romanian very easy to learn. And I am veery tempted, to be honest 😀 If I was a bit less busy, I'd probably start a 'Romanian challenge' series right away.
