i was a big fan of butthole surfers and a pianist. I learnt every song on Psychic Powerless Another Mans Sac. I spent particular time on the solo from Woly Boly, it rly changed the way i played piano. I thought i mustve been doing something wrong, but lo and behold cecil taylor is playing in the exact same way as me, the piano as a drum, a guitar, a whole orchestra. I could never be as musically intelligent as cecil and man is my hero now, but i at least feel a kind of awe that i made it into the same musical universe as him through the butthole surfers of all things also now i wont feel so bad for sweating heaps when playing piano

And then the rhythm splits and dispersed into space chaos just holding on - to something - I know not what. Back, out like more dynamic, very deceptive, subtle. Then. Wham!!!! He beats them all. Genius. Man I wish there was more filmed early stuff.

Thank you so much for the upload. It’s priceless as history. It shows a young JB Ulmer. I mean no disrespect and will gladly accept a smack down if someone with better sources then me knows but isn’t this sort of an odd film ? I’m not saying they are - i’m just saying some of the musicians seem to be nodding out at times. There’s one part where I became certain the song was collapsing into chaos. I love this song and can’t thank you enough for uploading it.

This sounds more like Classical music than it is Jazz. Incredible finger movement, he's way ahead. Let me look for more of his music. He recorded 74 albums!

When I went to a Cecil Taylor concert, the world would never be the same afterwards. As of today, this experience will never be possible. It belongs to the past. But although recordings can never capture the sonic brilliance of a CT live gig, I am only a walk to the record shelf away from feeling the thrill all over again. Only a mouse click away. Trane 1967 - Pops 1971 - Duke 1974 - Mingus 1979 - Count 1984 - Miles 1991 - Dizzy 1993 - Sinatra 1998 - Ray 2004 - Ornette 2015 - Cecil 2018. A giant has left us. Thank you for the music!

Starts melodically, then it's the usual Cecil. He's skilled, brilliant, but rather repetitive in the rhythms and thunderous 2 hand passages he plays. I prefer Muhal Richard Abrams, he's much more varied. Or Anthony Davis.

This is fucking retarded.
@Huedtunes8 жыл бұрын
+hamster king im biting on what is probably stupid to respond to but Cecil Taylor's music is not easy to listen to in most cases. People that enjoy his music understand the innovations he incorporates and it's those innovations that make his music hard to listen to, because Taylor doesn't follow conventional chord changes or scales. I would guess that musicians like his music much more than others.
@King_of_Hamsters8 жыл бұрын
You're making an assumption that I don't enjoy and make music. This is just retarded. That's okay with me and he looks like he's having fun.
@Huedtunes8 жыл бұрын
+hamster king I was assuming that but I meant that on average probably more musicians like this than non musicians because of their understanding of what he's doing. I'm sure plenty of musicians hate this.

ah man can't you folks see that ulmer is an essential part at making this whole performance sound the way it does and the same goes to all the other musicians. there just talking why should ulmer sound any different in this conversation... the conservative music world really grinds my gears sometimes

even though it took him decades to reach full fame, he still did it! One of the first musicians to pound the ivory like this! Beat on the keys! ha ha! Interesting and confusing to the listener, with a mix of hard bop, old jazz and with constant changes. Excellent example of free jazz! thank you ORNETTE YOU WILD MAN! rest in peace
@danielstearns90809 жыл бұрын
just to straighten-out some BS here... Love or Hate Ulmer, he's absolutely there because Ornette wants him there AS IS. I'm 100% positive of this.... If you don't dig it, okay, but this is a distinction some guys just refuse to admit into reality--- another way, that's not the one you want.
