Why were deserters not blacklisted forever? It was a serious offense, especially with the rigid British

I lived on beautiful Nantucket from 95-03. If you could find housing, there were so many ways to work hard and make a good living. Magical memories with friends and sunsets, music and food. We worked feverishly and played joyfully, understanding that we were in a rare situation. Blessed, she’s always in my heart…the “Grey Lady”

Painting is correct, vessel is sailing into the wind ( not directly ),but with the wind from forward of directly from the side ( avoiding use of nautical terminology here). This is why the square sails are angled as close to the ship's centerline as possible , the wind is coming from forward, and the flag is streaming aft. If the vessel were sailing with the wimd coming from behind the square sails would be across the ship's centerline and as poster Barry Beckford states, the flag would then be sreaming forward. Aloha

Surprisingly (well, maybe not? 29:00 to 31:00) there's no mention of Melville writing Moby Dick in The Beautiful 💚 Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, at a Pittsfield place called Arrowhead.

As usual, gringo's come in, somehow deem the land theirs, tell the natives that they have to work off "debt," (which is laughable) the gringo's also bring with them lots of disease which all but wipes out the native population, thus, looking for CHEAP LABOR they begin importing more people of color. Now they bitch and moan there are TOO MANY PEOPLE OF COLOR LOL. America sure is a funny (aka: depressing) place. Especially if you're a person of color.

This was just a horribly done presentation. The sound was terrible due to the acoustics of the room and the large video in the background was reduced to insignificance by zooming out to capture the museum for the entire presentation. So you wanted to pitch your museum, you could have done a pan around at the beginning then switched to full screen of the video and all the while doing a voiceover recorded in a sound booth.

Thank you for your feedback. This was filmed in 2005 under limited conditions. Although not good video, we decided to share it during the pandemic for historical purposes. We've worked on improving our productions since then. You might want to view the most current version of the program done in 2024 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp-VlIWdjbxgh7M. Thank you again.

I grew up on the island. You used to be able to buy a sperm whale tooth and scrimshaw kit in the Seven Seas giftshop at Broadstreet and Center. There are also remnants of the 'camels' they used to float ships over the bar in the 1800s. They're buried in the sands out at Madaket, Eel point and Tuckernuck. There's a good chance of finding sperm whale teeth in the yard of a whaling captain's house such as I did as a young boy in '66. Oh, and if you go down main street to Washington and Main there is a storm drain in the cobblestones. On a hot day you can still smell whale oil that soaked in the soil. Possibly during the Great Fire of 1846.

I luv in Massachusetts, Nantucket IS A “ bougie” place to visit these days! You need $$ for the trip there and $$ to enjoy yourself while in the island! It is beautiful beyond words but sadly not accessible for most people to go visit. A shame because it’s magical to just walk around and take in the sights and smells. Martha’s Vinyard has much of the same “ feeling” and is somewhat easier and cheaper to go visit. Either way, Massachusetts has some beautiful places to go visit!

No one does a documentary about a place better than Ric Burns...No one. I really wish he would do one on Chicago...not just the mob history but all of Chicago history like he did for New York. Only he could do it justice. Brilliant! Simply brilliant. He is genius.

Im from New Zealand and of Maori heritage. My ancestor traveled from Nantucket or closely by as a whaler on the shores close to NZ in the 1800's. His name and descendants are now dotted all throughout NZ. Hence why I'm here learning my history

It is my home. My foundation. My moral compass. I was born and raised there. Schooled and educated there. Went to church every Sunday. Had children at the Cottage Hospital. Married at "The bird Sanctuary". It is my home. I have no other. I grew up and played on every inch of this Island with all the descendants of the great whaling families. As an adult, I feel privileged to be a Nantucketer or as summer people called us "Townies" or "Islanders". We called them "Off Islanders" or "Summer people". We were happy to see old friends come back as much as we were glad to see them go. It is my home. Thank you for this beautiful look into the importance our Island once contributed to the global economy, if even for a brief period in time.

@@LilyGazou hello..I had to grow up, leave the Island, and see the world as I'd seen it on TV growing up to really appreciate the wonderful Island that is my HOME. In my youth, I couldn't WAIT to leave this ROCK..lol. As an adult, I cling to it and everything and everyone in our then small community. We all knew each other. That's a comfortable warm blanket feeling, still is.😊

They dare not tell the truth about how the Europeans came over there and slaughtered the Indians so that they can steel Nantucket from them, and continue to slaughter the Indians, all over new England and Connecticut, and this mass slaughter happened in November, and after the Europeans felt like they successfully slaughtered and took over all that land they celebrated and Abraham Lincoln called it a national holiday and named it Thanksgiving 🦃..then they went to Africa and took the Africans and enslaved them and whatever Indians they didn't unalive and forced them into slave labor to build up Nantucket and all through out new England..so if you want to tell this story then don't leave out the truth

Nantucket looks so beautiful, but you need to be wealthy to either live there or visit. Not a place that is open to the general population unless you are rich. Not for the average working-class folks in America as the film tries to depict.
