I keep them in 106 qt plastic bin no lid use at any time. Occassionally ill shake the egg carton material so the poop stuck in there falls to the bottom. Tried using cereal substrate, coco coir substrate, and oatmeal substrate. Coco coir has the least smell, risk of contamination, but I cant "suggest" where the cricket lay their eggs like I can with oatmeal/cereal substrates. Soil/coco coir mix is a a plastic container is great for cricket egg placement. Where do your crickets lay their eggs?!

Cool idea and video... But I have been breeding crickets for years... Mine have no noticeable smell. I keep a thin layer of vermiculite about 1/2 an inch deep on the floor of my bins. Never had any problem with smell at all.... I'm kinda wondering how on earth people get their crickets to smell? I hear a lot of people say crickets stink really bad and I'm like... What? Really? How? I don't keep a lid on my bins as it is not needed as long as the sides are smooth and 6 inches or more above the highest point the crickets have access to in the bin. I have thousands and thousands of crickets. I could keep them in my living room as they don't smell in the slightest.

Maybe it is the species??? I breed the Jamaican Cricket (Gryllus assimilis) and Black Field Crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus). No smell here.

THANK YOU for this video! I watched it and setup a nearly identical box. My intake for air is PVC and a PC fan like yours. I used a 90' elbow directly into the box. On the outtake side, i used PVC as well, directly into the box. However, it is going directly into an air purifier. Like yours, I have no odors! As you've pointed out, ventilation is key, as well as feeding/water source, and picking out any die off. I would also add, the dish you offer a water resource, should be VERY shallow. I made the mistake of using one with 1" depth, and they will smother each other to stay next to water. Use a lid of some form that has very little lip to it.

Thank you for your video. My guess is that your ventilation is overkill. To save some electricity you could try running the fans on the 5 volt rail instead of the 12 volt rails. Using the 5 volt rail will create less noise and about 1/6th of the energy your using now while still providing plenty of ventilation, and your fans will run practically forever. Another idea is that you could put just one fan on the 5v rail and vent outside your home without any filter resistance, thus reducing your power consumption to 1/12th of what your using now. By the way, how long is your filter lasting?

Looks pretty easy really, I could probably throw that together in an hour for less than $50 in parts. I have one bearded dragon and just keeping a week's supply of crickets for him stinks pretty bad, if I had a few full grown beardies and wanted hundreds of crickets at a time I'd do this.
