Hey friend, I know this was 4 years ago, but hopefully you're still around. A question: how close are the strings to each other, and how close do you think you could possibly get them?
@MiscellaneousMcC3 ай бұрын
@@bassmjm Good day! The strings on this instrument are 1 centimetre apart. How close you can get them depends on how tight the strings are. Usually I make a test setup with a scrap piece of wood and the strings I want to use. The test would have a piece of wood the same length of the instrument and two strings with basic attachments. Tighten a string to the desired tension and aggressively pluck it. When it’s vibrating you can measure how wide it occilates. Add a millimetre or two to that measurement and that’s how close they can be. Add a second string that distance from the first and test to see if they touch. If you tighten the string it will occilate narrower, and can be put closer together, but the tone with be higher. If you increase the thickness of the string it will lower the tone at the same tension. It’s a lot of trial and error. I hope this helps! Have fun!
@bassmjm3 ай бұрын
@@MiscellaneousMcC Understood, and that's very helpful, thank you! I was assuming it was a balance between tension, string gauge, and vibrating length. Just curious what you landed with here. What was the spacing for your larger, bed-type monochord?
@MiscellaneousMcC3 ай бұрын
@@bassmjm I believe it was 1.4cm for the bed monochord. The strings were 7 feet long.

Is that the actual sound/tone of the bed or are you playing an additional binaural tone underneath? It sounds incredible.
@MiscellaneousMcC6 ай бұрын
This was the actual tone from the instrument. It was a challenge to get the tone I was looking for with the strings I had available. But in the end it was a success. I hope to make another of these in the future.

I really would like to build one of these myself, I would love a step by step tutorial on the build, specifically the tuning portion of it as I do not know where to begin!
@MiscellaneousMcC8 ай бұрын
Fundamentally its just a box. The larger monochords are more challenging, but not really that different than the small ones. I am unaware of any step by step walkthroughs of making one. I no longer have a shop, so it's not possible for me to do a build instructions video, but I do have two monochord still, and could do a video on how to tune them in the future. One needs new strings anyways. I advise starting with a small instrument and using guitar strings for it. That will be the least money and will be the easiest to troubleshoot if things go wrong. :)

Exercises in gratitude are some of the best bits of "homework" that my therapist ever gave me. *smiles* She told me to write down five things for which I am grateful every day. Two weeks later and she nearly blushes when clarifying that she didn't mean every single entry had to be unique! Those pages in my journal always feel very good to read - a literal list of all the best things I could remember from my life.

Hi, I am really impressed that you achieved this fabulous sound using what materials were around you at the time. I know enough about audio to say there are no limits to how good a monochord should sound, or how it should be constructed. I listened to someone on KZbin playing four 12 string monochords side by side, and the phasing between the monochords added a fantastic dimension to the sound. I reckon it’s best to forget about working to plans, and just to improvise the construction on the fly. Thank you for being you.

Good day! I'm sorry I missed this comment and am responding so late. I was interested when I was still in high school, but my teacher gave me some incorrect information regarding it, and so I put it out of my mind for a number of years. Then, after watching Patch Adams one evening, I decided to look into it again and found I could donate. It all kind of took off after that, and before I knew it I was on the donation list!

As far as I'm aware, the flange distance on the older RF canon mounts are much shorter than the newer, EF lenses. So it wouldn't work without modifying the lens considerably.

This whole series was so touching. What a good hearted person you are. I won't forget your story. I believe your stomach condition may have been caused by pesticides on your food. I developed a severe stomach condition back in 2010 where i was left unable to eat most food without vomiting and suffering severe pain and my esophagus has narrowed and actually closes around my food when i swallow certain foods, like eggs and egg noodles, causing great pain. I recently discovered that the number of cases of people with this condition has sky rocketed since 2000 and that that is the year that farmers began using many more pesticides than ever before on their crops. Some researchers believe it is absolutely caused by pesticides on the crops.
@MiscellaneousMcC Жыл бұрын
That is a distinct possibility. Thankfully the stomach pain has largely gone now. I had tried to take bike salts in an effort to reduce it, but it did little. I’m now on a more regimented diet which has helped a lot, and with addition of digestive enzymes everything seems to be back in order. I will look into the pesticide issue though, as I’ve not heard about it before! Thank you! 🙏

Hi, I love this monochord, the sound is just indescribably beautiful, thank you for it. I would now like to build myself one and wanted to ask you if you have built a frame inside under the top and bottom and glued the respective top and bottom parts with it. so that the rounding holds better. I didn't want to use nails and I'm not sure if the gluing on the frame is enough.I wanted to use 6mm multiplex beech panels that I want to steam shape. What do you think, is the gluing left and right enough or rather build a frame inside. I'm just afraid that the sound might suffer. As you can see, I really need help. Please excuse my bad english. Thank you very much and have a good time. Best regards, Tom
@MiscellaneousMcC11 ай бұрын
I'm sorry for the late reply, I've been away from KZbin for a while now. There is no frame within the instrument itself, however there are two sound posts that help it keep its shape. It was very difficult to get the top penal to bend properly without the sound posts supporting it. If you can steam bend the panels it would be much easier to assemble and would likely have even better sound. If you can steam bend the top and bottom panels you won't need a frame or even sound posts. Glue should easily be strong enough to hold the panels together.

How did white potatoes end up as red potatoes at harvest time?
@MiscellaneousMcC Жыл бұрын
This had me confused and so I went back through my old hard drives. It looks like I was missing the planting footage from the second year and used the footage from the previous year where white potatoes were used. Kind of embarrassing that I'd forgotten that whole rigmarole. Thanks for sending me down memory lane to figure that out! -They are red the whole season, alas the camera I had access to back then was blowing out the picture when I was planting. If you look at the news papers you can see how blown out they are.-
