Yeah the "parasitic mall" really felt half baked, and associated with being half baked, there was a lot of slapstick running around that just wasn't great. Before it turned into that, a lot of what it seemed to be working with was very generally interesting, but turned into too much time on a pretty mediocre plot that had too much equivalent time to the main Death story.

My friend spent years trying to get me to read the Discworld novels, I tried the first one and I DNF'd it after chapter 1. Last year I thought I'd try again and read Mort, I loved it and I'm going to give the Discworld novels another try.

Yep, that sums it up nicely! A good time, but not the best Witches book. (It also doesn’t help that the first time I read it, I was only reading Witches books, so I didn’t already know Ridcully et al!) That said, the gag with Verence’s “marital arts” book did make me guffaw when I first read it.

I remember this being the one where he tried to have an actual plot and so other aspects suffered. But those are very hazy memories, so I have no idea what I’d think now if I reread it!

@@NevsBookChannel it’s still early days with this. He’s just getting his stride and realising there’s a world here and not just Rincewind. I think it suffers a wee bit from having a premise, not an entire plot, but hey, we’re on book 3, we’re getting there.

This is where I started my current Discworld series read-through, and I loved it too. The Witches books are some of my favourites in the series (reading Wyrd Sisters in 2021 was what made Pratchett CLICK for me), so this was a delight when I finally got around to reading it.

@@genteelblackhole it was the first one where Pratchett starts to hit his stride. And even though the series ramps up a gear massively when Nanny Ogg gets introduced, Equal Rites still has one of my favourite gags in the whole Discworld series: “The lodgings were on the top floor next to the well-guarded premises of a respectable dealer in stolen property because, as Granny had heard, good fences make good neighbours”

Lovely review. Small Gods is one of my favourite Pratchett books too. I’m rereading Discworld at the moment too (without attempting to review!), I reread Small Gods a few months ago and it was every bit as great as I’d remembered.

Mild spoiler for a future video but I recently finished Maskerade in my reread, a book that I went into as just quite middle of the road, but was actually incredibly strong and probably one of the best witch books. I reckon it’s just my own perspective changing as I get older.

@@genteelblackhole it’s not one of the stronger ones, but the last Twoflower and Ribcewind interactions were very much when Prachett was developing, it’s nice to see what that’s like when he’s more in his stride.

I've always enjoyed the Greek islands, wonderful places to visit. I've had Mythos on my shelf for years and never got round to it, I really should as I love Greek mythology (Classical Studies was my favourite subject at school) and Stephen Fry is one of the coolest people on this planet. Cheers for sharing this, great video.

ACOTAR was very meh for me honestly. The last book (so far) in the series was my favorite. A bit too much of the spice for me but the character arc in the last book was so great! But. Even if I don't necessarily love the whole series or endorse it.....I agree with everything you said about censorship and book bans and gatekeeping.

I bought this book about 6 months ago but haven't read it yet. I tried Fourth Wing and didn't enjoy it much so if I don't enjoy ACOTAR I guess romantic fantasy just isn't for me.

I hated Fourth Wing but I grew up with Anne McCaffrey. Interested in your opinion on this title as I approach it like a strange plant on an alien planet. Not taking my helmet, gloves off and not touching it. I saw Promethus.

Hey I really enjoyed this review! I agree with you about not starting Discworld here. I think if I had started with this one, I probably wouldn't have continued with series which would have been a real bummer since I love it!

I want to visit Greece so badly!! I am always so jealous of people from Europe that can just visit all the beautiful countries via train (I think haha ) I also had no idea Stephen fry wrote books!

Train journeys to Greece are theoretically possible, but it’d take about 3 ferries, 4 days and probably about 3 grand. 3 hour flights are not much fun but significantly easier. And Stephen Fry’s written more books than I’ve had hot dinners 😂

I really love the film too, the book’s different mostly because it’s entirely from the Chief’s perspective. Nurse Ratched is one of the all time greatest literary villains

@TheBookThing Cliff is a star and I'm the same, I think half of my audience came from Cliff. It's similar here (Staffordshire, England), lots of beautiful green spaces, lots of rain too. The Death side of the story is and actually most of Windal’s arc is pretty good, but the whole organism that is based on a city and the stakes relating to it feel like it’s only half-conceptualised (unusual for Pratchett) and it takes far too much of the narrative. In my opinion anyway.

When I played the first recording back t made me cringe so hard and I swore it would never see the light of day but when I started to edit the final version I figured that if I’m going to say how godawful it is then I should at least share a taste of it. Glad you got a laugh 😁 I’m nearly finished Mr Mercedes and, put it this way, I’m planning on starting Finders Keepers pretty soon after.

Great wrap-Up! 11/22/63 was a fantastic read and probably in my top ten King books or thereabouts. Annihilation has often been praised on booktube and is high on my tbr. Interested to hear your thoughts on Mr Mercedes. Have a great August!

I've had 11.22.63 on my shelf unread for ages, the two really long Stephen King books I've read both had dodgy endings which puts me off. Sounds great though, like the Red Dwarf episode. Glad you enjoyed Cadfael, the second one is really good too and is set around the siege of Shrewsbury during the civil war which is good fun.

It DID remind me of the Red Dwarf episode. I had a friend once who would say that ‘Stephen King couldn’t finish his dinner never mind a book’. This is one of the better endings. I think the nature of the story having a natural climax means that he had to have an ending in mind instead of just freewheeling.

It really was, weirdly my only disappointment was one of the Discworld books. Everything else was pretty top notch.
