At this point in the movie, the ludes they got, lemons, were super old and they didn’t kick in right away like the regular kind they were used to doing so they were trying to kick start the process by working out to metabolize them faster. The added weight was probably an ego thing tbh but if they really thought once they kicked in they could lift it sure I could buy that explanation.

This trilogy literally would’ve been perfect if not for Arvads interference. We would’ve got a beautiful sandman and harry story and a most likely Spider-Man 4 after.
