Hi, could you or any one please explain how to measure the drums to know what size of head to get? Thank you in advance.
@jimdrum12 ай бұрын
Sure. The crown of a drum head is how they are measured. That is the edge to edge size. Take a tape measure or ruler and simply put on top of the head and measure from one edge to another edge. Common full sizes: Macho (smallest drum of the set): 7.15” crown = 7” or 7-¼” Hembra (largest drum of the set): 8.5” crown = 8.5” or 8-⅝”, 9” Common entry level sizes: Macho (smallest drum of the set): 6-¾” Hembra (largest drum of the set): 8” Fyi this is different from the drum size which is measured to the shells bearing edge to edge.

It started with thee ENTIRE front head off.Then a hole the size of a 33 and a third record (LP) now it looks like a 45 record or COFFEE CAN size What's up with all these changes!!!!Pick one and STOP!! Basically they all sound fine!
@jimdrum1 Жыл бұрын
I think that's mostly true. But that may be a rock thing as jazz drummers always had the front head on the kick drum. So did the Beatles and all of the early rock and roll. It was probably the late sixties when they took the head completely off but I'm not positive. I think they all have their own sound and it is somewhat situational.

Just heat up the can in a microwave.
@jimdrum1 Жыл бұрын
You cannot put metal in a mircowave, fyi. Beside the fact that I don't have a microwave, putting a metal can in a mirco will spark and become a fire hazard.
@classicalteacher Жыл бұрын
@@jimdrum1 like my dad always said, if you can stick a cat in a microwave, you can put a tin can in it.

it’s BS way, it definitely needs reinforcement ring to avoid the drumhead crack
@jimdrum1 Жыл бұрын
Fyi, back in the day (the 70s), there were no reinforment rings. So we would cut and go with it. I never tore the head because of it. Maybe you have had a different experience but using the term BS is impolite to describe something when I'm just imparting a historical trick. Unless you exert a lot of pressure on the edges, using it is fine for a long period of time and cheap. Even the companies that put holes in there bass drum heads, didn't do that. They worked fine.

On this link, there is a vintage photo with a commerical head with hole. Additionally, most folks, used a pillow or form on the inside for dampening as shown. images.app.goo.gl/PZgUstTuCkKuZiy2A

What else can you use besides a coffee can?
@jimdrum1 Жыл бұрын
That's a good question Joe. I have only used a coffee can previously. I will say now they actually make a hole cutter and it looks like they work great. It's easier than a coffee can! www.sweetwater.com/c1195--Drum_Keys_Tuning_Tools?highlight=HOLECUTTER&mrkgadid=&mrkgcl=28&mrkgen=&mrkgbflag=&mrkgcat=&acctid=21700000001645388&dskeywordid=&lid=58700008472812680&dsproductgroupid=&product_id=HOLECUTTER&prodctry=US&prodlang=en&channel=online&storeid=&device=m&network=x&matchtype=&adpos=largenumber&locationid=9009672&creative=&targetid=&campaignid=20349950157&awsearchcpc=&&&gclid=CjwKCAjws9ipBhB1EiwAccEi1Ob77_u4z7GG2DMT0FvybAMrMjEsCp8uuOhPWpvofDDkAFBqZmZTQxoC89QQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I just got a ported head..
@jimdrum1 Жыл бұрын
In the 70s, ported heads were not available so we had to cut our own or just take the front head off altogether. This video is simply to document the technique for younger people that did not live in those deprived times, ha~! Also, you might buy a drum without a ported head. This is a way to create a port so you don't have to buy a new one.

I used to do this, but now I use rubber on both sides of the hoop, either from a tire patch kit or by cutting a rectangular piece from a bicycle tire tube. Glued on with rubber cement or taped on with gaffers tape.
@jimdrum1 Жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good idea too... I haven't needed to do it as the gaffers tape has been working for me. Thanks.
