As a 72 year old returning to running after 5 decades, I do agree with almost all of your statements. I do disagree about the need for a running partner. I am definitely an introvert type personality that does not need constant stimulation of the company of others. I do like people and enjoy being with them, but only for short periods of time. When I have tried to plan things with others, I end up doing those things much less than when I "just do it myself". In the past decade my wife and I had been walking together and both have enjoyed it. But when either one of us cannot do the walk together, it is too easy to not do anything. Getting started does take effort. It is very frustrating when one's body doesn't do the things it used to do. I needed a goal. My daughter challenged me to run the BAA 5K this April. I know I can walk the distance. Now I need to get my jogging speed to at least 3.1 mph for one hour. If I go faster, I don't have as long to run to be a qualified finisher. At bare minimum, I know I can walk the entire length and get a chance to cross the Boston Marathon finish line (although the 5K route ends further down the road) and fulfill a (part) of a life long goal. A reasonable goal is needed.
