Prof. Gjerdingen calls this "the Monte-Romanesca". When people talk about the so-called "Pachelbel progression" I sometimes make fun of them and say, no, no, that's not the "Pachelbel progression" this is the "Pachelbel progression". And when they are confused, I say: "Don't you know Pachelbel's famous piece, Chaconne in C-Dur, which is much more obstinate than his Canon and Gigue?" :D Also, listen to (or even better, play) Händel's Chaconne in C-Dur, HWV 484, with 49 variations, all on these chords. After that, you will hear it everywhere! For example: 2nd movement of Mozart's famous 40th Symphony and also in the 3rd movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
@shimon.berlinАй бұрын
That true! I prefer rising 5ths, because in the name “Monte Romanesca” are already 2 names/labels and I need more time to imagine how it works 😂
And one more thing:) www.tobis-notenarchiv.de/bach/19-Anhang_II/03-Klavierwerke/BWV_Anh_082.pdf

@@shimon.berlin This last example, BWV Anh 82 is actually by Johann Bernhard Bach, Sebastian's second cousin. And yes, it's a great example of rising fifths.

Thank you - fascinating! (It taught me that what I was temporarily - and quite wrongly - thinking of as a baroque sequence is just as much a romantic sequence.)
@shimon.berlinАй бұрын
Indeed, in romantic style it has a different, more pathetic sound:)

Just FYI the idea of chords with 6ths "ajouté" is not a Baroque concept. The chord that you called and Fm with an added 6 is is a D half-diminished seventh (D, F, Ab, C), which, at this point as we have already modulated to Eb, serves a dominant function on the leading along with the Bb (V) as we head to the Eb (tonic).

Up a second, down a third, up a second, down a third... It's probably the second most common sequence in this period. This is a very nice example by Krebs, as most of his examples are. One can never have enough Krebs in one's life.

Yes, I'm very interested in late Romantic music too. Has Jazz its origins in late Romantic music?
@shimon.berlinАй бұрын
This is a very good question! I have no short answer, but in my opinion complexity of harmony and structure of music was going parallel in every style. There are many similarities like chromatism, chords with lot of options.

Actually, with your improvisation on the Sarabande, you have already explained why Handel only wrote down the basic material and two variations: in the Baroque period, the repetition was traditionally slightly varied by improvising ornaments, playing around the melody and the bass line. It was therefore the performer's role to embellish the pieces himself while playing in order to show off his skills.
@shimon.berlin2 ай бұрын
Yes, you are right! But….;) in HWV 442 he wrote 62 variations and HWV 484 - 49 variations

As a classical organist and pianist, I am really glad to see this short lecture you presented on Chopins Chord Progressions. Even better how you presented it on the organ. I am currently composing an organ work for my University assignment and one of my goals is implementing Chopins style into it, as I am always curious what Chopin would sound like when performed on the organ. This video is an inspiration! Thankyou Szymon! Please do not delete this video!

Fantastic! Improvisation is how they used to teach composition back in the day. Improvisation is not really encouraged (outside of Jazz, rock,etc). It’s a shame that improvisation is looked down upon, and would explain why classical music is perceived as inflexible, outdated, and dying. I’m glad you’re keeping the torch lit.

very nice video!! well explained and structured. But I also think, within the audio quality of your take unfortortunatly no chance to hear anything of diverent voices, because of the big sound of the organ. because of this It makes no big difference to the part where you just playing the chords while you playing the original part of chopin, and thats very pity. So i can understand the "piano please comment below. Thank you for sharing! love it. :)
