Excellent video. I ended up using this product because I couldnt find Pledge and it was the only thing I found at Home Depot. I also found it worked well for coating clear parts, windshields etc.

A few weeks ago I came across my bottle of Pledge back when it still had the future branding on it. Still sealed, but I noticed quite a bit of yellowing despite not being exposed to sun and being in a conditioned room all this time. Hopefully this quick shine doesn't yellow the same way this does. Though, to be honest, it could be me not remembering it being this yellow when I bought it. I could have sworn it was more clear though.
@JonBius
@JonBius 3 күн бұрын
It's pretty much clear when new. My old bottles have yellowed a bit, but I still use them. When airbrushed on the coating looks fine, and after weathering it's not really a worry. If you're not sure about your bottle, give it a test on an old model or a milk jug - that'll let you see how much of an issue if any it will be. For my work, I've not found it to be a problem. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@JonBius out of curiosity, is the yellowing noticeable when put in a different container? Since mine is sealed, i haven't ruled out the possibility of the PET plastic container yellowing while the material inside is remaining clear.

You dodged a bullet not using Mr. Color paints. Bandai requires really tight mixes of up to 4 different paints for some MS colors. Luckily they made life easier for Gundam Modelers with a separate paint line later on that's Gundam-specific.

I remember when 08th MS Team made it to the US dubbed via Toonami in the early 2000s. This was one of the most based Zeon mobile suits of the Universal Century. It's pilot, Captain Norris Packard, was one of the deadliest non-psychic pilots of the One Year War.

7:21 - "I know, they're not robots...." Huh? They totally are... Is this about them being called "Mobile Suits" or the fact that they're not (normally) autonomous? Or are people really splitting that hair? I call 'em robots all day every day. Except Macross, those ones are "modern aircraft".
@JonBius
@JonBius 6 күн бұрын
Oh yes, people DO split those hairs, sometimes in the most insanely vicious ways. Not often, but they do. They want me to know that they're NOT robots, but that people are inside controlling them, and how could you call yourself a fan... blah blah blah. I just end up deleting those comments. The only reason I mention it is to sort of poke fun at it. Honestly, sometimes I think folks forget that it's all made up stories. When I first got into building Gunpla, I heard people shouting "Gunpla is freedom!" And then some of the same people lectured me about how that type of alloy used for armor wouldn't rust, and that my chipping was completely out of scale an unrealistic. Pretty soon I found out it's like any other genre... some good folks in it, and a few that find their sense of well being from thinking they need to lecture their "lessers". It's so dad, really. Thanks for watching and commenting! I am grateful. Happy day to you!

@@JonBius Ha, yeah when you mentioned that Gundam folk mostly don't nitpick, I was all ready to nitpick that. :) It took me a while to learn not to be a jerk, and how not to be a jerk. What I want out of Gundam tends not to align too well with what other people want, it's frustrating. But I just gotta roll with that. Regarding the "it's a piloted vehicle" thing, it is kind of interesting to me that that's not something people readily recognize. Or I can be in a room of scale modelers, tell them the scale, and they still won't really grasp how large the machine is supposed to be. Like "whoa, it's that big?" an I'm like "well I told you it was 1:144..." That got me interested in trying to visually relate the builds to human scale somehow. Open cockpits would be one way, but it doesn't look great IMO and means the robot has to be kind of static. The scale difference between human and MS is great enough that I think it's still hard to relate the two in a meaningful way.
@JonBius
@JonBius 6 күн бұрын
@@tetsujin_144 Yeah, it's hard not to get caught in the cycle of "jerkiness", even when you try to avoid it. I recall the old adage "everyone is someone else's jerk". 😂 I've actually been accused of being "fake" and "a jerk" because I try to be very positive and encouraging. It amazes me when people see "nice" as "micro-aggression". 🤦‍♂🤷‍♂ This is part of the reason why I dropped off of ALL social media. You do bring up a good point - it is hard to convey the scale of many of the scifi models. In many ways, you either are forced to place it in a diorama, or have a pilot or crew figure on it. I've always wished that someone would release small crew figures. Glue on 2 or 3 people crawling around a Gunpla and you have an instant feel for scale. But many times I prefer to ignore scale, and see the model (Gunpla or otherwise) as a "canvas". I simply paint and weather it as I want, not necessarily being driven by scale, but rather by whatever artistic notion is inspiring me. It may look like a 1/144 scale Gunpla with insanely huge weathering to one person, while another may interpret it as a 1/20 scale human sized armored suit. The motivating factors for me are "did I have fun with it?", and "do *some* viewers enjoy seeing it?" If someone doesn't enjoy, that's fine. The sad part is the number of folks who feel compelled to explain why they don't like it, why they don't like you, and also to point out you dress funny and have a bad haircut. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 But the payoff is when someone contacts me and says "this was helpful", or "I enjoyed watching it". Even if it is one person, I always like knowing the videos I make with my stompy robots, rolling shootie things, and flying pew-pew toys are enjoyed. 😊 I have seen one of the best ways in a diorama/vignette setting to convey scale for Gunpla is to use other large objects, such as a tree, house, or car. Seeing a small car parked at the foot of a Gunpla instantly gives the setting. Thank you for thoughtful discussion. I always appreciate that!

Im new to airbrushing and tried tamiya lacquer thinner retarder to thin my tamiya paints. And its beautiful, i notice my nato green is more greenier compared to acrylic thinner is more like a hint of yellowish something, idk. But the difference is noticble. And since using tamiya lacquer thinner i notice the paint in my airbrush runs out quick. Usually my 10 to 10 (thinner to paint)drop mixture covers all my test spoon. Maybe becuz tamiya lacquer flow smoothly😂. Thanks to ur video im having a big switch to lacquer bit by bit starting with thinners. Great video!
@JonBius
@JonBius Ай бұрын
Lacquer thinners do tend to thin paint "better", in an odd way. I think it also reduces the opacity a bit more, thus the coverage taking a bit more paint. But it goes on so much smoother. If you're getting color separation, you might want to thin the paint a little less. Some colors respond to higher concentrations of thinning by separating into their different color components. Try dialing back the ration just a bit and see if it helps. While a brand's paints are generally the same, so colors behave a little different. Thanks for watching and commenting!
