Thanks so much Simon - this is a trip down memory lane, your book 'New Celtic Mandolin' turned me on to the magic of our little instrument and I'm still exploring its beautiful music. Will you ever do another volume of 'Great tunes for the Mandolin' ? The first two were absolutely brilliant. Thanks again and in these dark days may the music keep your spirits high! 👏👏👏👏👏

Thanks very much for this. A 'Great Tunes' Vol. 3 is definitely a possibility - the two current books have been very well received - although probably not in the near future. I can certainly identify with your final comment!

This is wonderful! It makes me happy every time it comes on in my friend group's medieval playlist. What are the instruments, in particular the one doing the melody at the beginning? It sounds so pretty.
@MayorAndJames9 күн бұрын
The instrument at the beginning is a mandolin. You'll also hear mandola, mandocello, acoustic guitar, violin, tin whistle, organ and bodhran.

Wonderful! Could I ask who made that mandocello and it looks to be something like an 18" bout on it? That is significantly larger than a Gibson K-5?
@MayorAndJames17 күн бұрын
Thank you! The mandocello was made by Mike Vanden in 1987. Mike's website is here: vanden.co.uk/ He would know more about any comparison with a Gibson if you contact him. I compare old and new Vanden mandocellos here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHS6g3RojLCNmbssi=tIQXO59A0NNUkVbi

Hello. Beautiful. How many frets required on mandolin to attempt to learn this exquisite and haunting melody?
@SimonMayor-j2i27 күн бұрын
Hello Charles. The tune is in the key of Eb and goes up to the note of C on the 20th fret of the mandolin. Best wishes, Simon.

I can't get my ear to appreciate the sound of a mandocello. I feel the tuning is too low and sounding too much like a de-tuned twelve string. I do like the timbre of a bazouki though, much brighter with a more energetic resonance. Nice playing however.

@MayorAndJames26 күн бұрын
Thank you David. I have fond memories of the Oxford Song Book... or was it The Oxford book of Folksongs? My class sang our hearts out in primary school to Shenandoah, The Sweet Nightingale, Michael Finnegan and numerous other fantastic songs. It inspired Simon and me, as adults, to go into schools with folk music and songs and to start writing songs for children. childrensmusic.co.uk

Simon, you seem highly literate in music theory in spite of having no official musical training. I assume you put in a lot of hours of self-directed study
@MayorAndJames2 ай бұрын
I've not consciously put in lots of hours, but I suppose you absorb a lot over the years. I took 'O' Level Music, my only music qualification, when I was about 16. There was no instrumental training, but there was a lot of theory in the exam in those days; we had to learn hymn book style harmony, 'rules' like avoiding consecutive fifths (which I now constantly break), cadences, chord inversions and lots more. It all seemed to click with me very easily. It was certainly formal and formulaic, but in retrospect was a very good grounding.

Beautiful playing and sound. Is there much difference between this F5 and your A5?
@MayorAndJames2 ай бұрын
Only in the sense that they're two different mandolins (both made by Mike Vanden). I think the 'which is best: F5 or A5' debate is a bit of a red herring in that every player has his/her own sound irrespective of what instrument they play. The difference in sound holes - Fs or oval - is more significant in my opinion. My preference is Fs, but it's a personal thing.
@Lincoln129332 ай бұрын
@ Sure. That makes sense. I see some mandolin players using the bottom point of an F5 wedged up against their leg which I assume creates an opportunity for ergonomic comfort. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

Excellent. You don't usually hear mandolin players exploiting all the tone colours the instrument has to offer.

Thank you, and yes, the mandolin in the video is a new, standard Stretto model. I have five of Mike Vanden's mandolins dating back to 1983 and they're all great instruments. Not sure about the length of his waiting list.

I don't understand why some artists can play a guitar, acoustic or electric - or in this case a mandocello - and no sound emanates other than the sound of the strings being plucked and the accompanying note while others play and the sounds of the fingertips sliding up and down the wound strings is very prominent. That particular sound is very off putting and frankly detracts from the beauty of such an instrument and the ensuing performance. Surely such extraneous noise is audible to the performer. It baffles me that an accomplished professional seems unaware of or unfazed by it; perhaps even unable or unwilling to mitigate it.

Thank you, Simon. These obese mandolins have such a rich sound. As a guitarist, I have trouble with the tiny frets on a standard mandolin but wonder whether one with average-sized hands can tackle this instrument proficiently. I am keen on the octave mandolin. Note that I am but a serious amateur musician. Any advice you have wold be most welcome.
@MayorAndJames2 ай бұрын
Interesting question but hard to answer. I know excellent mandolin players with big hands and also people with small hands who play bass instruments. The mandocello neck is definitely more akin to a guitar in terms of scale length, so might not seem too alien to you. The stretch is greater, though, because the strings are a fifth apart. Hope that helps a little. Simon.
