Thank you for the history lesson. One of my grandfathers was a brakeman for the B&O railroad, but I was not told that until after he died so I never had the chance to talk to him about that part of his life.

Crappy plastic encased motors that are very difficult to repair I buy these on the cheap at train shows just to get the wheels, front and rear trucks.I use the motors armature's commutator to repair other postwar armartures that I have that need a good working commutator. I also prefer MPC motors for my my small MPC steam engines over these. MPC motors are better made than these.

Yes I agree these motors are difficult to service but they were made to reach a lower price point market. The fact that some are still functioning is amazing and I’m enjoying it while it lasts.

The 242 is considered one if the most common locos of that type. Those are very likely made from the same mold. Lionel reconfigured some if the metal molds for use with plastics. But plastic molds could not be converted to mold metal. Yours runs well, I try to shy away from plastic motored locos as they are notorious for poor operation and difficult to repair.

The 1st rail car behind the engine looks rather big like a G scale compared to everything else.😊 nice engine coverage. A lot of sounds in Menards while the other’s are nice and quiet.

I love the Santa Fes! The Lionel 2333 was produced in 1948 and 1949. The 2343 was made from 1950-1952. The 2353 from 1953-55, and the 2383 from 1958-66. I do not have the 2383, but I have the others. Menard's also put out a Bluebonnet version last year.

The electronic whistle, I believe they were going for a replacement of the Lionel air whistle. So if you listen to the air whistle tender and this one you will hear that they sound very similar. Doing this with oscillators electronics was pretty good for the times. In the tender, if you have not already replace the foam under the electronic circuit board. Often that foam rots away and then the board will touch the metal bass of the tender, and short out. While in there take a picture first and then you can vary the sound by moving the two variable resistors. TAKE PICTURE first for the controls so you know who to get them back like they were. I played around with one as a teen and found that the best sound was with the original sound. Now mine back then was a earlier version of the electronic whistle, so I assume the one in your tender is similar.

@@johnknippenberg-LandmarkYards Thanks! The Marx 21 has really nice lithography but seems somewhat underpowered compared to the plastic molded Marx 1095 which seems to pull much better and can handle longer heavier consists. Aside from the somewhat inaccurate paint details the Menards entries perform and pull up to 12 (most I can fit on my 4x8 ovals) cars in a realistic prototypical way. I’m very pleased with them at that price point and am considering another, possibly the recent Pennsylvania. I’d really like to see some more East Coast road names and perhaps some other diesels as well. Thanks! 🚂😉

The Lionel is an F-3, the Menard is an FP-7, and the Marx is a curious mixture. The side grills say FT, but the roof vents and trucks say something else.

I used to have the K-line version and you’re right, it was a fantastic puller! It would out pull all of my locomotives at the time. The plastic gear failed and I did replace that gear and then I gave it away. Great comparison video. New subscriber!👍

Nice video and train purchase. If you ever want to put a headlight lens on the Marx 490, here's a cheap & easy way to do so. Just cut the pin part off a clear push pin and glue the top half into the headlight hole on the front of the boiler.

Thanks for the show and example of opening up the passenger car top. I have a concern that I have see both Lionel and K-line do. The pick up assembly on the rail cars, or tender or passengers cars. The first time I seen these was in 1973, 1976 on those the brass contact on the axle was under top of the axle not like your here is with it on the bottom. The problem I see with the one you show here is extra wear on the axle since no only the weight of the car is pressing on the needle bearing plastic but now the add pressure. Also they tend to fall out when put on that way as well since all that is holding it in place is the little plastic nibs. Worse yet on the real spring trucks.
