Thank you Marlia you answered what has been on my mind Wow I needed to know this looking forth to Iceland,does this mean the cold is bearable because normal activities are going on You are always ready to go out despite snow and cold How would a new immigrant cope please?
@marlia12515 күн бұрын
@@chinwewilcox2874 Hi. It can get difficult especially when it’s too windy and a lot of snow but it’s still bearable. Icelanders even eat a lot of ice cream in the cold weather. As a new immigrant, It’s advisable to check weather(veður.is) before going somewhere. If there’s weather warning, better to stay inside. Other than that Wear layers :)
@chinwewilcox28745 күн бұрын
@marlia1251 wow I was thinking ice cream would experience no market there

I love that you're able to share your perspective as an immigrant, especially as a Southeast Asian. (the delivery prolly sounds harsh for other viewers who aren't from your background, but I get it LoL) How you feel about your situation is legitimate irrespective of people denying the reality of your experiences there. Immigrating to any place takes adjustment & time...could be years, decades or generations...& will be easier for some people than others - relative to the whole package we bring (economic, ethnic background etc., age, & always fortunately/unfortunately our outward presentation to the everyone around us) to the place we're settling in. Same experience in North America, society leans toward its nationals/people who have more local experience, of course, for many good reasons. So there will always be barriers to newcomers. I can also see how those native to Iceland feel strongly about their community given the smaller population. But all the best & really proud of you. Hoping to hear about the best things about Iceland too!

Hello! Where do you usually buy clothes in Iceland. I do not mind buying from thrift stores since I usually thrift naman. But for new clothes in case you need a particular piece where do you buy also shoes, boots, etc. thanks.
@marlia125114 күн бұрын
@@iamsunshine8697 for shoes I usually check out skor.is ,they often have discounts. For clothes I don’t really shop much. If I do, it’s usually semi formal dresses for parties which I buy at galleri 17 or Zara. But general clothes , mostly extraloppan in Smáralind :)

I think it is GREAT that the Icelandic people prefer to give jobs to native Icelanders. It is not about ''race'', it is about the social importance of ''deep roots'' and keeping the indigenous residents of a nation at the front of the line. Their parents and ancestors worked to build a nation for their children, not for next visitor off the boat. More is at stake than jobs and money. Iceland has a small population and a unique language and culture with a deep history. Places with larger populations like the Basque region of Spain, Venice in Italy, Bali in Indonesia have had their ecosystems and cultures severely damaged by economic visitors. Community first!
