@@NeuroDivergentPioneer Me too. I was just curious if you're located close to me. I'm in the Princeton area. I'm the one who left the comment on another one of your videos about highway driving and NVLD.
@Melissa07742 ай бұрын
Do you have NVLD clients that can only drive to places that they can get to on back roads because they can't drive on highways? I can't do a lot of lane changes on a busy multilane highway, or merge from an onramp or navigate a traffic circle. So anytime there's a place I want to go to, I have to carefully check Google Maps to make sure there's a way I get can get there without having to do encounter any of those things. If there's no way to get to a place without having to drive on a major highway where I do have to merge, then driving to that place is just not an option for me. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone in my life who can drive me places anymore, either. As you can imagine, this is an especially big problem, since I live in New Jersey. I'm 38 and I got my license when I was 18, but I've only ever driven on highways maybe four or five times, and only because I was forced to because of unexpected road closures or something. (naturally I was having a panic attack the whole time.)This has been such a huge problem because it drastically limits my job options and ability to get medical and dental care that I need and no one understands. Does anyone else with NVLD struggle with this issue? I know there are people with NVLD who can't drive at all because of it, but I feel like people are more understanding about that because it makes more sense to neurotypical people. In my case, people don't understand why I was able to get a license and can drive just fine every day, but just refuse to go to certain places because I have to drive on a highway. Funny enough, I recently got a job that I really like, that I almost didn't even apply for because it's in a town that normally I would never consider, because you can only get there by going on a huge dangerous traffic circle that everyone in New Jersey hates. But the job listing sounded so good, that I poured over the map to see if there was a back way, where I could avoid it, and luckily there was. It's ridiculous how far out of my way I go to avoid that circle and it's so embarrassing when I have to come up with an excuse for why I was late because my usual route was closed because of construction and I got lost trying to figure out another way and people wouldn't understand why I didn't just take the circle. I'm so lucky that Google Maps was invented pretty much right at the time when I was first getting my license. I don't know what the hell I'd do without it. It has to be the most useful thing ever invented!

Thank you for being so vocal about NVLD. I was wondering if you saw the discourse regarding Tim walz's son at the DNC. Without getting political bc it is unimportant. I wanted to say that I have noticed a lot of people talking about NVLD but who seem to be confused in regards to what it is and thought it might be a good opportunity for someone like yourself to take advantage of the fact that it is being highlighted by the media at the moment to help people understand what it is .Sorry if you have already done so this is the only social media site I use. I find myself in comment sections trying to explain it but not really getting anywhere. On a somewhat related note. I often find that many well meaning people end up saying things that are intended to be supportive but wind up making me feel misunderstood and infantalized or the other way around where my needs get ignored bc I don't "look disabled". Any advice on how to better communicate and be taken seriously? Also does your book come in audio form? I am dyslexic and find it difficult to read and process information at the same time.

Can headbanging and other stimming be part of NVLD? I also have sensory issues is that common? I had also read somewhere that we have "fixations" which are similar to special interests is that a thing? I certainly have interests that I am obsessed with. I know there is a lot of overlap with this and autism can you have both? Is it worth checking? I ask bc currently due to NVLD not being it's own thing formally in the DSM there is very little support available (as I'm sure everyone has experienced) I always find myself explaining NVLD to ppl and the second I relate it to autism they forget what NVLD is and just go on thinking I'm autistic. I have no problem with this if I am autistic but of course I have other separate difficulties that get overlooked eg. My issues with sense of direction issues reading graphs and so on. There have been a few autistic creators who have taken time to shine light on NVLD but it is always nice to see someone with NVLD doing it. ❤ thank you for your content. I saw this guy I fallow who has NVLD and just got his masters in special ed talking about NVLD being included in the next DSM has anyone seen any updates on this? I hope this is the case. Also sorry for my grammar and spelling. Unfortunately unlike others with NVLD who are good at spelling I have comorbid dyslexia and there is no one home to help me fix my mistakes. To everyone saying they think they might have NVLD it is my personal opinion that given how difficult it is to even find a doctor who knows what NVLD is I think self diagnosis is valid especially if it helps you understand and accept yourself. If nothing else there is no shame in accommodating yourself. I for example wear sunglasses whenever appropriate bc it helps me make eye contact and have used tools like Kahn academy to learn math bc watching the videos helps avoid the having to raise my hand and ask for something to be repeated only to still not understand. To the best of my knowledge it is still free. It can be a good tool for parents if your kid is falling behind it even has a point system where you can level up your avatar so it feels like a game. Another thing I do at least if I know the person well is raise my hand when I have a thought bc I have an issue knowing when it's my turn to speak. I have a hard time not interrupting especially when multi step instructions are involved. If I'm quiet and wait for the person to finish I often find I forget my question and bc I didn't understand early on in the explanation by the time the person is finished I am totally checked out and frustrated. If the person is cool with it I find its much easier for them to just stop when they see my hand and for me to ask my question so we are on the same page. I can't count the number of times I've gotten in trouble for "not following instructions" or "not listening" it is not always appropriate and can be annoying especially since we often ask what might seem like stupid questions and a lot of them but at least for me I need that clarification. If you can break down the task into smaller parts and focus on one thing at a time. Thanks if you read all of this. I have a hard time organizing my thoughts sorting through relevant information and communicating said information in a manner that is coherent so if any of it makes sense I am very happy. (It is so much worse in person lol) I tell people to just tell me to stop me and tell me I'm rambling bc I often have no idea they have stopped listening. Feel free if you got this far and want to respond to respond to only one of the things I said. I will get someone to help me keep it short should anyone wish to interact. ❤

Hey Linda, I was wondering if you have any advice. I’m 20 years old and have NVLD and ADHD. I have been learning to drive for a year now but have only made very little progress. Because of my attention issues I have trouble keeping track of speed limits, remembering to signal, etc. I also have difficulties making turns because of my visual spatial issues as well as parking and remembering how to do things that involve multiple steps such as parallel parking. I have tried explaining my challenges to my driving instructor on several occasions but he doesn’t seem to understand and continues to get frustrated with me whenever I make mistakes. Are there driving instructors that specialize in teaching neurodivergent individuals? Or does driving just take much longer for people with NVLD? Are there are any strategies out there for driving with NVLD? I am becoming very frustrated with this and am at a loss as to what to do because I am starting to think I am not capable of learning how to drive but I also don’t want to give up on driving.

I was diagnosed with NVLD at the age of 40 & it really helped me understand the many problems I’ve had in my life . In my twenties I trained as nurse but found things such as setting up IV drips or calculating drug dosages absolutely scary . Although I gained my qualification I chose not to pursue a career in nursing as I felt incompetent. I then trained as a social worker but again because I would interpret issues ‘ literally’ I once again doubted my decisions & felt unable to feel competent as a social worker . Finally I studied a BA in philosophy at which I excelled. Sadly tho , I still have not had a successful career & have worked mostly in low wage jobs . I am unable to maintain healthy relationships etc . I’ve had life long anxiety & depression & i never tell people about my diagnosis as firstly it’s difficult to explain the condition & secondly people don’t understand. I now work as a dog walker & am very happy in my work so at least this brings me comfort . It’s been very helpful listening to this video , for those out there who have NVLD - I send my love & hope you can find the help & resources x

I resonate with a lot of what you said. I haven’t had a close friend since middle school. I think reflecting back, I was socially unaware. I think it’s part of my insecurity today as well. I’ve surrounded myself with friends with fake connections when they were really just people to party with, and i think with the pandemic my anxiety and insecurity has grown while everyone else is going on with life without me. It has been really for I me to reflect on my own self and question my own perception of the past, and present. And the realization of my social misunderstanding and lack of understanding social norms has led to a lot of hurt in the past I’ve been taken advantage of from friends, brushing off insults and micro-aggressions, backhanded statements, being made fun of. And in the past with teammates looking at me odd, It’s sad. I was definitely “weird” but now I’m trying to understand how to combat and strengthen my interpersonal skills and self-awareness.

Hey, just came across this. Very interesting video, some things sound familiar. But aren't many of those symptoms just things parents failed to teach their children? e.g. not to sit down next to a stranger when there are many free seats available? Or when playing with others to not only play what one likes but also ask others what they want to play? My parents definitely explained those things to me. Are those things infos that other children pick up without someone telling them, or is it that nvld children don't understand ALTHOUGH it is explained to them? Does Stimulant ADHD Medication improve this condition? My social understanding and skills as well as motor skills have improved immensely since starting methylphenidate. What's your experience with that? Do nvld people become polyglots more easily than neurotypicals?
@NeuroDivergentPioneer3 жыл бұрын
I just saw your comment for some reason, so sorry. Stimulant medication doesn't improve symptoms of NVLD even though there are some crossover symptoms. The reason being is the causes of the symptoms are different. The skills mentioned are usually picked up from non-verbal communication and sometimes taught by parents as well. We learn social skills from observation, no one really teaches them to us. NVLD children, when explained to them, may or may not 'get it' depending on how rigid their thinking is. Some may argue with you as they way they think is different than neurotypicals and others will be able to see it and learn to make changes. Your social understanding and and motor skills most likely can be attributed to ADHD. Keep in mind one can have both ADHD and NVLD and ADHD can be misdiagnosed as NVLD.
