Cool...! re the modification to the back section, rather than sliping the protector over the bottom leg...could you possibly make the opening at the back much smaller, and slip the protector over the fork tube...and then downward onto the leg?
@BikesILikeСағат бұрын
That's a good idea! The darker rubber section is larger in diameter than the section I plan to mount on... but I might be able to open it up enough to slip over. I'll investigate that. Cheers. 👍

I used to believe the same, but this enhanced PLA is pretty tough stuff. I actually printed a PLA pot planter a few years ago. It ended up outside in the full Australian summer sun. It's now been out there for a few years in all weather and is completely fine. I fully expected to warp and melt.

Dear Paul, first of all congrats on your videos! With regards to your problem I think I would see an Indian dealer to document this issue. Just to be be on the safe side. However, I ride a bobber dark horse and have not come across this problem yet. Maybe because this part is shielded of by fairing? Worth investigating. Just a thought. Best Regards from Germany…

Hey cheers Bernd! I did call into my Indian dealer this morning and the lead tech had a good look over it. We're going to keep an eye on it to see if it progresses further. He said Indian are really good with warranty issues if we need to take action. He said the fork oil gets changed at the 24km service and they replace seals and bushings at the same time. It's been logged with them so I can now relax and ride. Having the fork shrouds on your Bobber will serve you well to protect from stone chips etc. That's good! Great to hear from Germany!

Dear Paul, thank you for your swift reply. Now that you can relax and ride I hope you enjoy your fantastic Chief every day even more! This is why we bought these maschines. Anyway, regarding your problem I have an XT500 from 1982 and is has fork bellows installed. I think these bellows keep the dust and dirt away from the seals thus keeping the fork nice and tidy. Has been working for the past 40+ years for my old XT, and might be a reasonable and easy to install option for your Chief. Again, just a thought. By the way, I really like your videos with all the work and passion you put into it. Well done Paul and a big thank you from Germany. Best Regards, Bernd

Ok the marks you are seeing are from the wiper seal, this is normal for hydraulic seals. The wiper seal sits above the main seal that keeps the oil in. All hydraulic seals must leave a smear of oil on the shaft other wise the seals run dry and will wear fast. If you have a look at a hydraulic cylinder on machinery they will look similar to yours, also if you look at your car and it has gas struts on your boot lid or Bonnet they will show marks similar to your bike forks. So if there is no major scratches the seals are doing thier job. If you had excessie oil on your forks I would then be concerned.

The best little fairing i had was on a 1981 XS 1100 Yamaha Sport RH. ( all black model ) . It had a small kick up at the top of screen that pushed air up and over. I could feel only slight turbulence on top of helmet . Over the years and on various bikes I intended to copy it but never did. Was not a big size but i believe modification of the principle should give results. Just a thought. Hope it all works out well for you.

On your original sketch, you assumed that air was rising up the front of a typical blade screen becoming turbulent at the top. However, your second sketch ignores rising air and assumes that the lip will push all of the air in the opposite direction. Why make this assumption? I believe that most turbulence above and around any screen is due to the difference between positive air pressure in front of the screen and negative pressure immediately behind the screen. The larger the area of the screen, the greater this effect becomes. Honda tried to reduce this difference on GL1200 screens by introducing a through screen vent in an effort to minimise the pressure diffential.
@BikesILike3 күн бұрын
Yeah that's a good point. I was thinking the air being directed downward would overcome the upward force of air but my assumption may be incorrect. Over the years on the bikes I've owned I've found negative air pressure and turbulence to be two separate factors. I've ordered screens with vents that have worked to relieved negative air pressure and that feeling of being sucked forward, but not necessarily the turbulence.
@markbright78452 күн бұрын
@BikesILike I'm an aircraft engineer. I'm just thinking that turbulence will be generated in the negative pressure area, also, the bolts and clamp possibly mess up any aero on the forward side of the screen anyway. It's an inexact science for anyone without a wind tunnel. Motorcycles are unaerodynamic already without a full streamliner body.
@BikesILike2 күн бұрын
@markbright7845 No, I appreciate your feedback Mark, I really do. Based on your astute questioning, I went back and redesigned a new version to angle forward like a boat hull. Retaining the lip to direct the air down and away. But if the pressure differential is the root cause, it probably won't make much difference. I still want to do it just to see what happens. :) I'm now thinking a scoop at the bottom of the shield to direct a stream of forced air up the back of the screen might work to? 🤔 In which case, I could go back to my original screen and design a lower air scoop design for that. Hmmm... more thinking to do, as you can see I like experimenting.
