Dropping the front sprocket from 15 to 14 tooth is one of the best things you can do for the low end on a 400ex. I did it and the difference was amazing. I only lost about 4 mph on the top too.

Second gear isn't even an option climbing that particular hill. You can hear how loaded down the engine is on the way up, and that's using only 1st gear and plenty of clutch work!

Honda originally designed the 400 as a racing quad, but it's pretty much been replaced by the 450R on the track. But it's the bee's knees on the trails, especially tight twisty ones! It doesn't demand high RPMs like the 450, and the reverse gear on the later models comes in pretty handy. It's 2WD, so not exactly the best mud bike. The right tires will help, but forget about the the big deep mud holes. Maintenance is no worse than on any other Japanese 4 stroke I guess, but def dependable.

I was looking into buying on of these and wanted to use it mainly for trail riding and very limited jumping and when I say that I mean only the occasional jump you might hit on the trail. But my question is how is it for trail riding and how does it handle mud and how would you think it would fare against 250 cc dirt bikes? OO and I forgot to add are 400ex's a lot of maintenance meaning like a lot of oil changes and starters and thing of that sort. ty btw good vid

The idea behind the timing advance was to get a little more lower end. Since I was going from 18" to 20" rear tires, the plan was for the timing advance to make up for the low end I'd be losing by increasing tire size. Works for me.

Tennessee -- We've got plenty of hills :) And you're right about one thing: going down that hill all off-camber is a hell of a lot scarier than going up!

Sorry for the dated response, but by now you're probably pretty close to 16. I believe that's Honda's minimum recommended age, but I'm not 100%. Obviously skill plays a factor too. I would definitely not recommend a 400 to a 14 yr old with no prior ATV experience.

Any gear between 1st and 4th, depending on the type of wheelie I suppose. 1st gear for doing a wheelie from a standstill (or really slow ones in general). If you're wound out in 4th, throw your weight back, and nail it on a small bump, she'll stand up if you stay in it. The 400EX is well balanced and it's smoothly accelerating 4 stroke help makes it a wheelie machine ;)

Nothing too crazy: Dynojet kit, K&N airfilter/breather, Sparks Advance Timing Key, Powerbomb Headers, FMF pipe, ProTaper oversized bars, oversized steering stem (forget the brand), ITP Baja Holeshot rims and tires (20"/22" I think), and Tusk Racing nerf bars. I think that covers most of the add-ons...

@TheOGAmigos You're right! I really needed to "get into it more" on a 45 degree pitch wooded hillside where I could barely even manage to keep the front wheels down while leaning over the handlebars. Brilliant! I'll try to "grow some balls", but in the meantime you work on growing that brain.

@hondarider5781 Dude I really don't know what you can handle. I don't even know if you can drive... But I do know that there is a BIG difference between a 400 and a 250 soo if you think your ready go for it....

Goggle mount, but I've gotta keep my goggles pretty tight or else the footage becomes shaky and blurry. I don't trust the sticky thing to hold up on a convex surface like a helmet. Maybe on something flatter.
