i loved the 800mm back in school-athletics, very tactical. The idea is to keep up with the first pack, tho' be fine with settling in 5th place or so. Then see how the pack develops in the second lap while you prime the charge for the last 150m. Exciting stuff! Don't think i ever won a race as everyone else had similar ideas, tho' got top 3 a few times.

The runner's last 1/4 lap reminds me of this kid on my swim team back in the day. He used to try to sprint the 500 like he was swimming a 50.

I've done it in 1500m. I led for the first 1 3/4 lap, and ended up at the last quartile place.

I’m confused if his job is to be the pace maker how is he able to win it?

Actually what happened: The pacemaker was told to run the WR pace, that's it. He finished the race because he thought he had a chance to win(pacemakers are supposed to leave after a while)

He was right. If the other runners had followed him. If these other runners had been able to maintain their pace and speed, then the fastest of them would have broken the world records by several seconds.

Petition to have the 800 meter as a time trial. Every one runs on his own, fastest wins.

OK he did. the performance is impressive, but even more so his personality and determination. Because he went into that garra without caring about his opponents. He ran that race against the clock, he was only his opponent. Studied at the table. Great performa. Only athletes are able to meditate and work so thoroughly with their limits. What they do in their everyday life conditions their results. Magnificent. Something to be able to read beyond appearance to be dazzled by their value.

Commentators haven't a clue what they're on about. The pace-maker did the 1st lap in 49-50 secs which is exactly what you'd want a PM to do in an 800m.

So I take it the distance is measured from the furthest back part of the resting wig, as would be the rules with long jump, measuring from the furthest back indentation that's been made in the sand.
