I love old neon. I plan on getting a custom sign made at some point. It will be a 3/8ths scale replica of the one in the film, once I finish recreateing the original 1960 blueprint from a fuzzy screenshot.

Hi, What’s the best thing to use to hand a neon sign that doesn’t have any plastic backing. It’s just the glass tubes.

Black on the back of the tubes is also so it doesn't shine on the wall it's hanging on... ...when the light shines 'backward' onto the wall it tends to drown out the sign so you don't have a 'crisp' display. I always make sure mine are painted on the rear for this purpose. Makes a huge difference.

Sir you have a very informative video. I was given a budweiser king of beers sign today that the the wording tube is broken but the surrounding neon still trys to come on. It looks to be very similar in size to the sign your working on here. Is the budweiser word tube something that can be purchased as a replacement part? Or am I out of luck?

Do you still do this full time? Or as a Hobby? I was a Tubebender for 20 years and finally got out of it, due to supplies getting harder to find and replacement parts for production pieces skyrocketing. It was a great gig for me Miss it

I never repair a mercury unit , i make it new , i only repair the neon units (Red gas) and those some times i prefer make new also .

Because I try not to do it too much.

I'm thinking it must be the wiring? Because the neon tube is all one big section, and it lights up uniformly.. I guess I have to have someone look at it. Probably end up just getting a new sign. Just can't afford it right now, and this sign brings me money. It's a vicious circle. :(

Great video. But my sign is doing something different. It's one big piece. About 9" high and 32" long. A connection at each end. When I pull the chain, it comes on for sometimes a few seconds or a few minute. No flickering. Fully lit. Someone told me the transformer may have a short. Got a new one, does the same. Took the boots off and checked, one was not twisted together very good, so I thought I solved it. Still is doing the same. Do you know what it could be? Thanks for your time! :)
