Ten portraits a day, especially from photos, is steep. Subject matter needs to engage you, but it’s also important to iron out skills that stand in the way of your vision; never settle.

Nice video, I agree that challenges can often push one too much into unnecessary burnout and even good results might not outweigh the resentment you may build towards the thing you're making. I often question if we are even commiting enough to memory to make the time valuable, when grinding too long. Have you given timed drawings a try? 15 minute backgrounds, 30 second up to 5 minute poses; not about moving as fast as you can but considering plotting the main things in a way that feels timely to the time you have. Lots of resources online for that if you're interested. Also good title, the shameless clickbait will always draw in more viewers, like me, haha.

Thanks, no I haven’t tried the speed poses, although I have done some warmup drawing videos with fine liner. And they still take 20 minutes. I think the idea of just drawing in the block shapes for landscapes and getting more versed to visualising the shapes and form for the tonal darks and lights would really help me on my journey. Haha perhaps I might even make you want to subscribe and sing the bell 👍🙂.

Just out of curiosity. Why did you decided to learn drawing portraits using the loomis method as of using the grid method. As for the last portrait, if the hair was a little longer it would've look a little like jesus, but it does resemble a bit like Keanu Reeves.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I had the heads and hands book as a present a while ago. I have done the grid method and gained a resemblance of the person well with it, but wanted to have a real go with Loomis (hence 30 try’s) to see how it fairs for speed. I guess I’m learning loads on shading as-well. Who knows what the next 30 day experiment will bring 🙂

A nice tip for you, do details last and be softer with your pencil. Its like painting, you build it up with each stroke/line.

Good effort. I'm also learning to draw with the loomis method and I find it hard to get the proportions right. But as they say practice makes perfect.

Enjoyed that, I need to know your mic setup - that was seriously impressive wind blocking!
@kens-creations
@kens-creations Жыл бұрын
Thanks Tim. The mic is nothing special. It does however have direct sockets for iPhone, android, and camera which I thought was pretty cool. Also the wind reduction is really good, as I didn’t have to use voice isolation in video editing. Just watched a couple of your videos, and I think your using a Dji or ride, which is definitely a better option. But happy with this for now, although it’s useless for a GoPro.
@timday
@timday Жыл бұрын
I've spent a fortune on GoPro gear, on paper they are the best video solution for me but I always have problem with them failing to pick up external audio or the camera just freezing. I use the single transmitter version of the DJI wireless system, comes ready with connectors for phones and cameras but your setup, regardless of price seems to work very well. Personal preference, but try not to isolate your voice too much, it's nice to include a degree of environmental sounds from the location as well.
