Looks fantastic Vlad. I really miss visiting the astro meetings with the local clubs due to no longer being able to drive due to health issues. I do however still get away to bortle 1 skies for two weeks every year in Scotland and its Islands. I take my 12" go to dobsonian and 120 apo refractor. The skies are incredible and I always feel depressed for a while when I return home to bortle 5 😢.

Glad to hear that you get to get out under truly dark skies at least once a year. This year was crazy busy for me with work and family so this was the only star party that I made it too as well. 🥲

I agree completely! I joined the biggest club I could find in our state (i'm in aussie land, state is NSW) and they have land out west in the mountains the observing site is amazing, it's a bortle 2 but it's at 1200 m altitude the seeing is mostly very good. They have great events and are always ready to share knowledge and help out. Thanks for sharing Vlad! Love your setup there. I'm surprised you didn't bring a big dob, you must have good reasons though :)

Nice video, I have a 70 mm refractor that I mask down to 50 mm there by getting rid of the edge abberations. I mostly use it for daytime viewing and it works great for that!!... Since its masked down I get a much better image and at night as well all the stars are pinpoint and round with not much CA. My favorite eyepiece to use with it is the Televue Delight 18.2 👍

Hi Vlad, thanks again for sharing your knowlege! I have one more question, what mount would you use for a (good) 4 inch APO? (with accessories could go up to 6,7 or even 8kg). Is there some mount that could do both AltAz and EQ, and also not to be too big (to be grab and go as much as possible). I read in some forums that basic EQ5 mount can be converted to AltAz with some minimim fillig, so do you think this could be the way to go? Best would be that I can observe nature during day in altaz mode(I have nice view to the bay with hundreds of ships passing every day) , and do visual and even EAA during night in EQ mode (I am not interested in AP, and neither to GOTO, just visual mainly and some EAA, and terrestrial during day ). So is there a one mount which can do it all, or you would recomend that I buy 2 separate mounts, and which ones?
@AVTAstro
@AVTAstro 8 күн бұрын
Hi, I enjoy using EQ mounts with a small refractor as they give you tracking at night even if you're not using the GOTO. For the day its a total no-go though. Its just too heavy and cumbersome to use in Alt-Az mode. Personally I would start with a manual Alt-Az and add and EQ mount if you find it lacking for your nighttime viewing. Below are two mounts that I have personally own and use and love! Twilight I Adjustable Angle Alt-Azimuth Telescope Mount: amzn.to/3MoJFm9 Celestron Advanced VX Mount with Dual Saddle Plate Polar Axis Finder: amzn.to/3XlIhHd

Hello, it's great that you share your knowledge and vast experience, thanks to which we amateurs can avoid many mistakes with a wrong purchase. You say many times that your favorite refractor is the 4" APO and that's why I want to buy one. In addition to the 12" Newtonian on the Dobsonian, my APO is to be operated by me, my wife and children for viewing planets, moon, sun, maybe comets, binary stars and fundamentals DSO observations. However, I have a problem with the fact that your favorite refractor is 4" APO with a focal length of 500 mm, i.e. f/5. We know that for contrast imaging, e.g. planets or the moon, it is worth choosing a telescope with a longer focal length, e.g. approximately f/9- 11. Please help me make a choice, e.g. between: TS Optics 102 mm f/7 and TS Optics 102 mm f/11 for my applications. Or maybe I should choose a 4" telescope, approx. f/5, like you?
@AVTAstro
@AVTAstro 19 күн бұрын
For the planets or higher power viewing in general you would not want an f/5. I'd go with the f/7 option. F/11 makes it a very long and large instrument. Hope this helps!
@przemysawjordan9064
@przemysawjordan9064 19 күн бұрын
@@AVTAstro Hello again, thank you for your quick reply. So I understand that you use your f/5 telescope almost exclusively for astrophotography and not visual observations? In other words, in your opinion, f/7 is universal and more handy, therefore better as a family telescope, while f/11, although less handy, is more specialized for high magnifications (planets, double stars)? A trivial choice, because at the same time it is to be a complement to the 12" Newtonian on the Dobsonian, as you already know (for the DSO). I have a set of Baader Morpheus glasses, shortest focal length 4.5 mm. With an f/7 telescope at a focal length of 714mm it gives a magnification of 158 (only 1.5xD), while with f/11 with a focal length of 1122 it gives a magnification of 249 (2.5xD). If I choose f/7 as you suggested, a good quality Barlow lens will be the solution? Please remember that this is a refractor with an aperture of 102 mm. Best regards and I look forward to further discussion. :)

The FSQ106 that I have is an astrograph. Having said that its also an amazing visual scope for wide FOV. I use a 3" 30mm 100* Explore Scientific eyepiece with it netting me a ~5* FOV!!! Overall I own a lot of specialized refractors that do something very well but not a great one scope solution for a one scope setup. From the sound of it your looking for 1 overall good refractor and that's something around f/7.
@przemysawjordan9064
@przemysawjordan9064 18 күн бұрын
@@AVTAstro Vlad, thank you for further tips. It seems that f/7 will be a good, mobile solution that will help the whole family fall in love with astronomical observations. Thanks! Vlad, what does your extensive experience say about the system of two/three telescopes in the family? Given that I have a foldable 12" Newtonian on Dobsonian (without tracking and without Go-To), what one or two telescopes (with tracking or GoTo) would you buy to complement this 12" and create a complete system? I'm asking because maybe you have a better idea than mine for me and my family, better suited to our needs. I live in a small town (SQM 21.37) but it takes 25 minutes to get to heaven SQM 21.80 and I have a large car, so I can take at least two telescopes. Best regards and thank you in advance for your extensive answer.

Overall I think you have the right idea of a larger dob complimented by a refractor ~4" APO. That's exactly what I usualy use at star parties. The 4" APO is also an excellent grab and go scope.

8" dobsonian without hesitation for 95% of beginners to the hobby. The planets are always the first objects they want to observe and a small achro is a very poor choice. Too bad you didnt have the nagler.zoom to compare. And radian was replaced by delite, delos is more like a long eye relief ethos scaled back to 72, which was later scaled back to 62 for the delite which even looks like the radian but with a delos style adjustable eye cup rather than the clickstop radian eye guard. I was never a fan of the radian, I had a couple for a while. The original burgess/tmb planetary gave pretty much the same view for $50-100 when they first came out, and current ones and their countless rebrands are way cheaper. The build quality on the radian was better and there was that green letter pride of ownership part, but I found them highly over rated

There seem to be objects that benefit more from aperture than others. M42 didnt look (to me, imho) dramatically better in the 25 than it did in the 12 to me. E and F jumped out, and the image scale was much larger. But the color was rhe same as 12. The Flame looks massively better. Lagoon and Triifid though, they are real showers in the 25. The pink and blue in the Trifid, and the light blue in the Lagoon! I actually can see these same colors with the 12 inch Binoscope too, but just barely in the mono 12 inch, and in the 8 no color at all. And then there is Eta Carinae...I'll leave it at that 😀

An off topic question. There is something I don’t understand about refractors and DSO. If I use for visual observations for example a 150/750 mm F5 achromat and a 150/1200 F8 FPL53 APO, I understand that with the APO the Moon and planets will look 10x better and sharper but how about galaxies ? Will the galaxies look better in a high-quality APO than in a same-aperture short F5 achromat ? (For visual observations only, not astrophotography). Also is the contrast on galaxies better in the APO than in the same size achromat ? Thank you!
@AVTAstro
@AVTAstro 2 ай бұрын
Very good question. Really depends on the power you use. If all your using is 20x the f5 achro will produce an image that to most people will look almost identical to the APO. Conversely at anything above 50x even DSO begin to show secondary color. The higher the power the worst the effect. Also what a lot of people do not understand about secondary color is that it's light that's simply not in focus. What happens when your scope is slightly out of focus? Not as sharp of an image! This is as true for the planets as DSO. APO wins!!!
@BurningFlame1999

@@AVTAstro With my biggest refractor 4-inch ED-FPL51 I can see galaxies the best at 80-120x magnification so I guess that will be the magnification I will also use with bigger aperture ones. And between a 6 inch F6 achromat and a 5 inch APO triplet, do you still think the APO would better show galaxies at 80-120x, even if it has a smaller aperture ? Thank you!
