What an incredible find! Thank you for posting this. I’m sure it’s been more than 40 years since I’ve heard this…after the first few notes I sang right along and knew every word! The memory is an amazing thing. Saturday morning cartoons defined our generation as kids and this commercial was drilled into our heads. If you grew up in the 70’s or 80’s you’ll remember this one for sure. What a great little piece of the internet to re-discover today.

When you make a commercial that is so effective it's been broadcast for 55 years, you've done it right.

I Really Wish They Retold the Story of ths Commercial for a Tv Series would be really cool to have... Like for some weird reasons I don't even know why? But the main characters focuses on Mr. Owl and the Tootsie Pop Kid as the main protagonist, While Mr. Turtle, Mr. Fox, and Mr. Cow are just minor characters to be part of this show. and these two characters go on a quest to finally find out what's the Center of a Tootsie Roll Pop after all these years of not finding it out after all? Also I think it would be cooler if the title of the show was titled: Tootsie Pop: The Mini Adventures of Mr. Owl and Kid. How about that we got ourselfs a show here?

1969's Tootsie Pop commercial tells a story of a little boy who meets four different animals and asks a question about how many licks it takes to reach the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop since the whole world may never know. First, he meets up with a dairy cow named Mr. Cow and asks his question to which he replies that he always ends up biting because he likes eating grass and advises him to go and ask another sort of animal such as a fox since he's cleverer than he is. Then, he meets up with a wisecracking fox named Mr. Fox wears a pair of eyeglasses and has a Beatnik appearance. He asks his question to which he responds by telling him to go and ask another sort of animal such as a turtle since he's been around a lot longer than he is due to a fact, despite his line of work as a predator trying to attack a prey, he likes to bite a piece of meat. Then, he meets up with a slow-moving and easygoing turtle named Mr. Turtle who wears a pair of eyeglasses much like Mr. Fox before him and speaks with a grandfatherly voice. He asks his question to which he replies that he'd never even made it without biting even though he's shown to slow and steady and advises him to go and ask another sort of animal such as an owl since he's the wisest of them all. And finally, he meets up with a wise old owl named Mr. Owl who dons a teacher's hat and wears a pair of eyeglasses much like Mr. Fox and Mr. Turtle before him. He asks his question to which he agrees to solve a puzzle because it's the only way to find out. He tests out the Tootsie Pop with 3 licks "1, 2, 3." and gives it a noisy biting sound and places its stick behind his tail feathers. The little boy then walks away and mutters to himself that if there's anything he can't stand, he's a smart owl. 1969's Tootsie Pop commercial ends with the narrator who says that some people are asking about exactly how many licks it takes to reach the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop since the whole world may never know.
