Great video. Extremely helpful. Like you, I noticed my oiling wick was missing and I am about to find and install a replacement. However, I'm a bit unclear about tying the wick to the brass bearing on the motor shaft below.. Does the brass bearing turn, and won't it wrap up the thread? please advise. Many thanks again....PC
@steverabb8 күн бұрын
You can certainly try that and see what happens. To be safe, I just tied a knot around it which was not the easiest thing to do. I would guess a good percentage of these organs are missing the oil wick and they go unnoticed but continue to function just fine. I've never heard of one failing because of a missing oil wick, but that's Hammond reliability for you. Thanks for writing and am glad you found it useful. - Steve

I was a regular skater at The Hub during the last years of its existence, when it was then known as The Axle, in the 70s to its closing in the mid-80s. This was its era of skating to disco and Top 40 music. I was born a bit too late to have been able to skate to organ music performed by some of the organists I hear mentioned in videos highlighting their talents at various rinks throughout the Chicago area, such Leon Berry, Freddie Arnish, and Tony Tahlman. At least regularly. By the time I was skating, most organ skate sessions were relegated to an infrequent schedule, such as only on Sunday evenings, if not completely eliminated from a given rink's program. During my teen years, I never once considered going to an organ skate session, despite my mother recommending that I at least give it a try sometime. She and my father met roller skating to organ music in their youth and I guess I owe my being here to it. But I never did, and I have to say I regret not having skated to the sounds of these behemoth pipe organs. The music these organs produced, in conjunction with the creativity and skill of their players, amazes me. I know that there are a few rinks around the USA that still have organ sessions, but I'm not sure if they can compare to the sessions that one would have enjoyed with The Hub's massive pipe organ. That organ was still up in the rafters when I was skating at The Axle (nee Hub), complete with all its bells and whistles. I'd love to go back in time and experience what skating was like at The Hub with Mr. Berry at the keyboard. Of note: I remember that around 1982 that there was some disassembly of the organ in which several parts of it (mainly cuboid pipes) were stacked in the far non-skating area of the far west end of The Axle. The DJs on duty warned skaters to stay out of that area of the rink.

In 1975 my favorite cousin was killed in a head on accident with a drunk driver. My cousin was also an organ player. This was one of the hymns played at her funeral. I still miss her very much.

Were you ever an organist in a roller skating rink? If not, you should have been. And that’s a compliment! Also, do you ever play through a Leslie? Thanks! I so enjoy your style.
@steverabb2 ай бұрын
No, I never played in a skating rink, but thanks for the compliment. I use a Ventilator Leslie simulator which can be heard on a few of my videos. I also have a 122rv which I haven't used in awhile since it needs some work.

My favourite Hammond style. That reverb makes the organ sound like it is played in a stadium. I wish I could make my 1957 B3 sound that good!

As always, you always come through with that golden Hammond sound! I literally came into this world with the strains of the Hammond organ. My mother was in labor at a local hospital and my dad and several family members were all sitting in a little road house nearby awaiting the news of my birth (Pocono Mountain area). An organist on a Hammond entertained until the wee hours. That was in 1951 and my dad, gone now, always told that story with a certain glow.

Keep up that old Hammond style of the 50's and 60's. While the audience might be shrinking due to attrition, those dinosaurs remaining love every rendition.

The Thanksgiving Day the parade ended without this song, I actually sent Macy's customer service a message asking why it wasn't played, the representative wasn't able to find out why, although they did also say they were disappointed at it being replaced. This was the perfect way to end the parade every year!
