The striking miners and their families were - and still are - heroes to me. I was about 16 years old when the strike started - a politically naive teenager studying for A-Levels at a school in Surrey. I wasn't bothered at first - I couldn't understand why anyone would want to work in a mine, but over a few months, my indifference turned to passionate support. I was so inspired by the miner's determination and courage. I couldn't really do much to help, but I did organise a sixth form debate to pass a symbolic motion of support. I lost the (symbolic / meaningless ) vote, but I had at least tried to persuade a large room of students and teachers that the miners deserved their support. I cried when the miners marched back to work behind the Union Banners. I only saw the strike on TV but it set the course of the rest of my life. I have spent nearly all of my working life in the Not for Profit Advice Sector, fighting for the rights of ordinary people, and large amounts of time in political campaigning. If not for the strike I would probably have been selling insurance. I hope that the men and their families, in this excellent film and all of those who fought for their communities realise that although the strike was lost their courage inspired many people- including an angry and confused suburban teenager... The miners united will never be defeated

Good solid documentary. Approaches the subject from the correct angle. And there is no need to “balance” it by including free market gobbledegook spewed by barely concealed anti-social personality disordered demagogues and gangsters. This is a work dedicated to working class of the past when visions for a better world were still around. A world where industrial capitalism tamed by union power produced the greatest period of prosperity in the shortest amount of time i.e. 1945-1975. If you have pictures of von Hayek and Mises as your screensaver or worship Ayn Rand, don’t watch this, its not for you. Rewatch Atlas Shrugged instead. In this world, there is no such thing as natural justice. Justice must be carved out at enormous toil and cost. Most of the time, what you are left with it is the law of consequences. Everybody pays, one way or another. I’ll take that anytime over some highfalutin fantasy. Matter of fact, I prefer it and like it over some sentimental notion of justice. Case in point, all those good petite bourgeoise lemmings who bought Mags finest snake oil and who kept voting her back in while scoffing at every blue-collar worker in “dirty outdated jobs” and gloated at their own perceived awesomeness and “getting on with the times”. You know the type, puny fearful petite bourgeoise aspirants. Guess what? They are not doing too well nowadays, are they? With the entire edifice of their anxious existence in free fall. It is not just those “backward” blue collar workers in the north anymore, is there? No, the precious home counties are flailing now. They will sink evermore into destitution. There are no more council flats to flog off to greedy investors and parasitical financiers, there are no more national assets to privatise. Matter of fact, there is nothing left. But hey, as their aspirations turn into dust and their social mobility fantasies turn out be just that, they can comfort themselves that they have the “Iron Lady’s” picture above their mantlepiece. Enjoy. Now, that’s justice.

One of the worst documentary's I have ever seen. When I watch a documentary about an emotive subject I like to get both sides of the story. This was totally one sided. If you believe this the miners were choir boys who were just out minding their own business.

It does a good job in explaining exactly why the miners were striking and showing the police corruption. But it's a bit biased and doesn't even care to mention the cases where strikers murdered people and omitted a lot of footage of attacks on people just trying to go to work.

Another interesting fact about St Helena is that Boer POWs were sent here during the Boer War of 1899-1902. The British did this because they were worried about how British Boer subjects in the Cape and Natal might react to their fellow Boers in POW camps amongst them. 6000 Boers were sent there. 200 died and are buried there, where, unlike the slaves in this docco, they do have a graveyard and a memorial. The British soldiers who guarded the Boers taught them how to play rugby, which proved very popular. Ever since then the Boers have been determined to beat the British at rugby above all other opponents, and have generally succeeded, as their tally of four world cups shows. Of course, nowadays the South African team reflects all races and walks of life, not just Boers.

This richly-observed documentary by Jens Meurer captures the eccentricity and independence of Cromer, the rebel edge of England. Using the end of the pier show to hold together its interweaved biographical stories, it provides an emotional, sometimes weird survey of the politics of leaving the EU, spliced together with the production of a summertime special. Set during those stormy intemperate years within the Conservative Party, we see the meteoric rise of the populist Right. But far from being laden with dreary depictions of those now long-forgotten (or bitterly remembered) conflicts around Brexit, it shows how ordinary people in a far from ordinary location simply manage to get on and get by. You could perhaps take away from the documentary a sense of social fracture, but you would be wrong, it is filled with love. From a heartbroken lead singer hoping to be recalled for another season, to the character of John Lee - an arch Brexiteer and local fisherman who dreams of independence but reflects that he is the last of his line; no one in his family wishes to continue in the fishing business. Some of the cast are my friends, many are acquaintances and, poignantly, two of the cast have since sadly died. Their ghosts stay with you. But so too do those who leave North Norfolk to make a new life in Europe. Leaving a strange mix of hope and sorrow for those of us who watched this, the ones left behind, seated (when I watched it) in the very theatre it was filmed in. It is also laugh out loud funny. In the end though, this wonderful film is about the jobbing end of show business, love, unity, and the things that bind us together, and it points to several possible futures for its cast and for those watching - it will be up to us which path we choose now the storm has passed over. 10/10
