How do you keep the DPE yelling at you or making rude comments or making you feel small.
@FT-64Ай бұрын
Know your stuff well enough that they don’t have a reason to do any of that.
@KimWentworth-y8e2 ай бұрын
Just tracking a VOR is not enough. You need to tune in 2 and chart your position under the hood within a min. This is required for private Pilot. It's on the ACS
@FT-64Ай бұрын
Where? I’m prepping for my checkride, and I don’t see that anywhere.
@KimWentworth-y8eАй бұрын
@@FT-64 It is in the ACS in the navigation system. It does not state it directly. But they can have you do it. PS, just passed my check-ride. He had me only use one VOR. Instead my DPE tested my Emergency landing skills, he had me within 50 feet AGL of the the dirt road that I found during the Emergency landing. Then the DPE had me land at a difficult airport - Flabob where you have a giant hill right in the middle of downwind and a small narrow runway and we had some pretty good afternoon winds. It was tricky buy I put her down on the center line. He than asked me if I wanted to do a soft field take-off or short field take off. Well the obviously option was short field take off. I looked for every inch of extra runway to take-off on and Not because this was a test - Check-ride ( remember, I am the PIC) but I wanted to make it out safe. This DPE was really testing my flying skills. A good DPE.
@FT-64Ай бұрын
@@KimWentworth-y8e I passed mine last week, as well. Great DPE, but he only asked me to use a single VOR at any given time. He was much more brutal with unusual attitudes and emergencies.
@kimskislalomАй бұрын
@@FT-64 Yes, Mine had me do a single VOR also, since the other two VOR's were out of service. My DPE did Unusual attitudes and tried to get me lost. I did lost procedures. However, My DPE did have me do an emergency landing and did not give me my engine back until 50 AGL. I did Put in flaps and was going to put her down on a single dirt road. 50 feet AGL is close. He finally gave me my engine back. I climbed out carefully after he gave me my engine back. The DPE than diverted me to Flabob and it's a windy afternoon. There is a giant hill in the downwind, you have to be close to that terrain and than it's a tight base to Final. I overshoot it a bit but corrected and put her on center line on the skinny short runway. After a full stop taxi back. My DPE asked me to choose a soft field or short field. I choose Short field for obvious reasons (short runway) and looked for every inch of runway not because this was a test but I wanted to make it out. The DPE was testing my ADM knowledge. I gave an emergency briefing, made sure my frequency for a transition was in the radio - Flip-flop. Announced my take off, and as I was on upwind I had to switch to Riverside and ask for a transition or be ready to turn right to avoid the airspace. Got my transition approved, flew to home airport and DPE asked for short field landing. I put her down right where I said I was put her and right on center line. then off to the soft field and than I was done. I passed.

You have to be able to turn in two VOR's under the hood on instruments and chart your position.
@FT-64Ай бұрын
Not seeing that anywhere in the ACS. Where did you hear this requirement?

Update on CFI checkrides May of 2024. I saw someone comment , choose your DPE wisely. This couldn’t be a more true statement at least for the CFI. Your school should have a good understanding on who your CFI DPE’s are and what they like. That’s is so important for this checkride. Some like certian tasks to cover and some like other stuff. Just do your research and ask around. In terms of the CFI checkride. Make sure your CFI who’s training you is updating your lesson plans and tweaking anything wrong. You can’t just practice , practice, practice the wrong stuff. This is vital for not only passing but becoming a good CFI in the future. Always cross check what you learned. I guarantee when you do this license.. you will realize how wrongfully taught you were and CFI’s who taught you didn’t know what they were talking about. Always question your training!!! Never tell a DPE, “well that’s how I was trained”!

My instrument oral was 5 hours long with a short break. The DPE wanted everything. I passed, but haven’t taken another Checkride since then. I get anxious thinking about it.

For an instrument oral?? Dpe sounds like a piece of work. Mine was no longer than 2 hours and i felt it touched on everything important within the acs. What do you even discuss for 5 hours
@PrestigeWorldWide7779 ай бұрын
@@Steezington He seemed irritated when we began the exam. First thing he said was “you don’t seem nervous”, followed by “so what do you plan on doing in aviation?” I said I want to be a professional pilot. He then proceeded to call me CAPTAIN (with a sharp emphasis) the whole time. It was strange. At the end of the grueling exam he asked “why would you ever want to do this as a career?” He then said I should just go make money somewhere else and I would be better off. I earned my rating that day, but I stopped flying for years after that experience, even though I have always loved aviation. Extremely discouraging experience.

@mattthepilot9292 Жыл бұрын
No lazy eights, x country, emergency’s, or slow flight from what I remember. I got off really easy. Again each one will be different and he or she may have you do more or less depending on how the oral goes or how your other maneuvers are.

I like your frank approach to telling your story. I have my practical portion this friday and this is a good reminder to not get complacent. My oral portion was 10 hours, so I felt like since the hardest part is over with I can just relax now. That is not the truth
@mattthepilot9292 Жыл бұрын
10 hour oral is insane… I got off easy with my 3 hour oral. As long as you are proficient with the maneuvers you will be fine. And just remember if you make a mistake, teach your way out of it.

@@mattthepilot9292 WOW! Dude... I'm in a college/flight program where to get my RATP 1250 I need to complete my commercial with a specific flight-school and they only take me 3x a week max with 1 standby request. Estimated to be competed in 1 year+, such a drag for me. I wish I could go 5-6x a week. What was your cost to complete commercial?
@mattthepilot9292 Жыл бұрын
Total cost of the program was around $80,000. I started under part 141 and finished 61. Finishing my comm se under 61 helped expedite it even though I had to fly up to 250 before the ride. Just keep at it and stay patient. For most people, 9-12 months is typical for commercial.

Is a degree even worth it if you want to be a commercial pilot?
@mattthepilot9292 Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. It used to be where you couldn’t get a job at an airline without a 4 year degree. Now with the pilot shortage, they are adjusting their requirements. Still a good idea to get once especially if you want to get a job at the majors.

I remember feeling really bad for all those doctors, lawyers, and high school dropouts who have to learn about transonic flight, turboshaft engines, and gyroscopic precession. Luckily it's all dumbed down to a point where it's actually sometimes hard to guess what they are actually trying to talk about, but for someone with no background in math and physics it must be pretty tough still.
@alk672 Жыл бұрын
A note on that 2-3 times a week - plan to actually fly 2-3 times a week, which in most parts of the country means actually plan to fly 4-5 times a week, then maybe you get 2-3 with weather cancellation and life getting in the way.
