Very well said... copying is basically understanding the process of getting an end result. once you have done that you have a jumping point for your vision and know how to achieve the look or end result you want. for me it was singing, just watching people how they sing and imitating their sound has led me to figure out what I was doing right and doing wrong. then from there I knew how to control my voice to the achieve the chatacteristic sound/ emotion I want.
