I have this era old Mercury Golden series 20hp engine, but i cant find any info about this models (made in Belgium)...its still realiable engine to use?

@@janchaloupka8350 It's a good outboard. Practically the same machine as the one made in the USA. Accuracy is needed with the Thunderbolt ignition system, it can be easily broken if used incorrectly, because the voltage is very high. You should never start without a plug or grounding, usually the ignition coil breaks or something else. However, it is an old engine, so they can have any number of faults. Quite often bad repairs or maintenance done by someone.

Love those old Mercs, I had a 1972 Merc 800 80hp on a 19ft sportcraft caprice cuddy. Was a little underpowered as my Father didn't want a "speed boat..." Well, it wasn't but to my young surprise the thing hit 34mph at 5200rpm with the basic aluminium prop. Was a popular boat back then with a cuddy to sleep 2 with no problem. My point being I knew 2 guys who had very similar boats one had the 85 johnson and the other the 115 evinrude. Mine was ever so slightly faster than the 85, and the 115 was quicker but not by as much as you'd think. Those old Mercs were great motors.

That's not a 78, or at least the Cowl Wrap isn't. it looks like a 73 or 74.

Made in Belgium. Serialnumber based it is 78-81. Different numbers than US models and different decals too. I think - 73 has a chrome front face.

@@runoilijasirkka I had a 78. The 78 decal on the Cowl Wrap was a lot Different. A 78 also had Red Lines on the Decal on the Front Face
