I have seen another KZbinr showcase exploring the game without choosing a starter and in X/Y I believe it was, you get a shiny Bulbasuar glitch block and a fucked-up trainer battle sprite since there isn't a battle sprite for the pajamas. Overall though it does get progressively more boring because of how the coding capabilities improve which is kind of a shame.

I looked into this, and alongside some other things I've learned, here's my explanation: - The 'crash after battle' white screen in Red is due to the game thinking the font is loaded in a battle, which is caused by the corruptions happening here. Yellow just works differently here, in Yellow this is responsible for the glitched NPC sprites. - There seem to be 3 separate corruptions here. - The first corruption is the 'wild appeared' effect, which comes from from having over 6 Pokemon and is actually related to the Pokeballs in bottom right that appear when you enter a battle. The game thinks you have 256 Pokemon here, and in processing the status conditions of each of them, corrupts a bunch of the game's memory with a buffer overflow. This corruption ends at the current enemy Pokemon's data and is responsible for much of the glitchiness on the enemy's side (such as the enemy turning into a Magmar). This also corrupts the value that keeps track of the font being loaded and is the reason behind the crash after the battle in Red and the glitchy sprites in Yellow. (The enemy turning into Magmar is also why the enemy turns red.) - The second is the Cooltrainer move (--) and its corruption effects. The corruption it does primarily depends on saved screen data. In red/blue, this screen data comes from the overworld, and is saved every time you open, for example, the Pokemon or Item menus. Due to a certain common tile (the bottom left corner of a bush) this is not usually harmful. However, in Yellow, this saved screen data is overwritten in battle right before sending out your Pokemon with data that causes a crash due to not having a backsprite. However, opening your Pokemon menu fixes this crash due to saving new screen data. (Opening the item menu also works for this purpose.) Whether in-battle screen data crashes or not depends on whether the saved screen data has the player's Pokemon's back sprite in it. One of the tiles in the back sprite happens to keep the crash from happening. The Cooltrainer move's corruption further corrupts the enemy. I've noticed a Muk turning from red to yellow. The Cooltrainer move's corruption doesn't seem to be enough to cause the limbos as running from the battle has no effect, so there's a third corruption involved. - The third corruption is most likely from Pokemon past the 6th slot gaining XP and leveling up from the opponent failing. Note that this does not require an EXP. ALL. Due to another buffer overflow, the game thinks many of the Pokemon past the 6th slot have participated in the battle and gives them XP. Since these Pokemon are actually other parts of the game's memory being treated as Pokemon, this causes corruption of some values of memory. This is responsible for the limbo effect, verified by BGB's debugger. It's most likely influenced by Cooltrainer considering the predictability of where you're sent based on the Pokemon you encounter. Initially I had some trouble reproducing the limbos, but after a bit I seem to have succeeded. Very weird effect. It appears that your Y coordinate is not locked, and you can still come across NPCs and hit map connections (causing crashes if you keep going for long enough). However, the world doesn't actually move with you. The repeating map effect is just a result of how the game renders the world. Opening your Start menu will show you where you are in the map. It's as if the map's attached to you. Upon further investigation, I've found out why this happens; there are 2 memory values that tell the game where in a given block (2 by 2 square of tiles) the player is standing. These values are usually only 0 or 1. The corruption from gaining experience can corrupt these values to way out of bounds numbers, causing the limbo effect. This can happen in either axis, so the repetition can happen both horizontally and vertically. The corruption that causes this effect only seems to be able to make this happen vertically, however. As for the weird NPCs, their appearance is, as mentioned, caused by a similar quirk to what causes Red to freeze at a white screen. Those aren't glitched Charmander heads, however. They are a jumble of various graphics that are normally loaded during battle. However, their dialogue, which is not valid for the map, is more interesting. This is most likely an effect of Cooltrainer or the levelups corrupting NPC data. The position you start at in the limbo upon initially entering it seems to depend on where you were in the previous map; most likely because the value that determines which map you were on is corrupted, but your position in said map is not. Most of the limbos so far have just been existing maps that have been slightly glitched up. But Krabby's limbo is different. It's... glitchier. That's because it's actually a glitch map, Unused Rocket Hideout 0xCC, one of 3 identical maps. Much of their data does not come from valid map data, so they are very weird. The 'hooked <wild Pokemon>' effect and the glitched battle type seem to be caused by the game trying to draw the map as you move, with some corruption being caused by some weird offsets with this. Although, in my testing, I didn't get a hooked Cubone, I got... a hooked Missingno. I hacked my way around the crashes so I could see its effects, and it behaves exactly the same as the hooked Cubone, including the 'out of Safari balls' thing when trying to run. Krabby's Limbo also has another weird thing. I walked around a bit and accidentally hit a warp to out of bounds in a valid map. Considering the tileset and palette, it may have possibly been Silph Co. again, or a valid Rocket Hideout map. I also noticed that the east connection on Krabby's Limbo leads to Silph Co., so going east for long enough may send you there, though it may be hard to tell when you actually hit that connection. In my own testing, I've actually preferred to fail an attempt to flee from the enemy Pokemon instead of trying to use a move. The Cooltrainer move can crash the game if actually used in battle successfully.
