When you say, "You've copied from a young age and try to create your piece as close to the reference as possible", I relate to that too. At a young age, I seemed to do the same as you, I drew from comics, those soldier mags like The Victor and Commando (I loved them) but I never knew back then I would have become a soldier myself LOL. Now I try to do what you've just described with Steal Like An Artist. I gather a mood board for example my favourite Kingfisher I want to draw. But instead of copying the reference as close as I can I manipulate three or four other Kingfishers into the main reference so I have my unique version.

Thank you for sharing your story, I’m glad you could relate to some of the topics. It’s so interesting that you became a soldier after drawing from the soldier magazines. I love the idea of a mood board too! 😊

How would you frame drafting paper/film? Would it be the same as any other paper, please?
@SamanthaCliftArt8 күн бұрын
Yes similar, always with a mount so the paper doesn’t touch the glass, but with drafting film you’ll need a backing board and you can choose which colour you’d prefer, which is fun 🤩
@koontyb48277 күн бұрын
@@SamanthaCliftArt So am I right in saying, if you use a slice tool to create whiskers for example I'd have to use a plain white backing board? Thank you so much for assisting me.

I find flowers in pencil a lot harder than animals, birds or still life, yet I find flowers easier in oils and watercolours. Despite this, I still have problems with yellow flowers in all mediums. I just can't get the tones right in yellow, but I can in other colours.

I know what you mean, especially the shadows of a yellow flower 🌼 thank you for watching 😊

I was thrilled to see you recommend the Daler Rowney paper. I bought a pad a month or so ago and as I' was finishing a couple of other pieces, I have only just started using this pad. However, it is one of the only papers I can buy locally, without having to drive an hour or more each way or paying a fortune in postage. All the others are just way too expensive in Australia for a hobbyist, if they are even available. One that I found quite by accident was from Kmart. It said watercolour paper but when I got it home, it was thickish cartridge paper. The front side is too rough for pencils but the back is smoother and holds pencil layers well. I recently bought another, but when I opened that, it's not the same, more like blotting paper, with a mauve tint to it. Yesterday I was back on Officeworks, and low and behold, there was a home brand pad that looks very similar to the original Kmart pad so I bought one to try it out. Sometimes it's worth trying something cheap. If it doesn't work out, the grandkids are happy enough to use it.

It’s definitely a good all rounder, easier to get and more affordable. Yes it’s good not to discount the cheaper papers as they might suit what you’re drawing. I still haven’t found the perfect paper, but there are still lots to try! Yes my kids definitely enjoy the paper if it doesn’t work out 😊

How much did you charge for this and how many years have you been art-ing my love??❤🎉 this is gorgeous im about to start two german shepherd commissions from a single person and i dont know what to do!! I dont want to overcharge with how expensive everything is nowadays but i dont want to screw myself over as an artist and sell myself short😮
@SamanthaCliftArtАй бұрын
Hiya, it was about £400 I think and I’ve been doing commissions on and off for about 5 years. I think you need time take into account the amount of materials used and what is reasonable for the amount of time it takes. I always have a look at artists that have been doing it for a similar length of time and similar skill and see what they are charging. Definitely don’t sell yourself short. I started at about £50 and worked up as I got busier 😊

@@SamanthaCliftArt so if I make a smaller pet portrait that I use watercolor and colored pencil that i take 4 hours on✏️ 🙂 🙃 I should charge likeeeee..... $92??

Is it feasible to put a base down with pastel and then use coloured pencils over the pastel or does that not work?

Just what I needed starting with colour pencils. Please share a link to the paper you use as there are so many Pastelmat versions that it is hard to know and easier to find out from a pro like yourself. Thank you. And by the way, your art is amazing, I'm so glad I've found you. Subbed.
