Yes the silent version was test screened before Steamboat Willie but the sound version was released in 1929 so yes technically this was Mickey and Minnie's debut short.

I definitely like the silent version a lot better. And believe me, I wish that the rest of Disney’s films were completely silent🙄

Plane were invented in 1912,I think. So this short was made 16 years after the invention of airplanes…

Why was it always the girls' panties that floated away? Must be the manufacturers. Whoever was producing girls panties in the 1920s really needed to do better quality checking to make sure they actually stayed on! Though with how many girls they've saved by doubling as parachutes, perhaps the manufacturers were doing something right, you couldn't use your undies as a parachute in the 2020s, things just aren't made like they used to be.

Ngl, for Mickey's first short, he sure acted like a douche towards Minnie.

Steamboat Willie might’ve been the first Mickey Mouse film ever released, but this cartoon definitely feels like the first that was EVER made. It’s the most primitive in design with Mickey definitely having an “Oswald The Lucky Rabbit at Home” rip off vibe. XD But even with all that said, this short is WAY more interesting than Steamboat Willie in terms of both animation and plot. The animation is way more fluid and lively, even sneaking in some clever filmmaking, almost 3D looking techniques. Definitely one of the more fun experiments of late 1920s animation, silent or not. Also, Mickey you dirty lustful fuck. XD

Notice the 1929 copyright on the title card. But, it's probably almost impossible by now to find a 1928 original (copyright "MCMXXVIII" not "MCMXXIX") and the animation is the same either way.

It's uncomfortable to see this in a cartoon for all ages in any context, but to be fair it doesn't seem to be condoning his actions. At least Mickey pays for the consequences of his actions in this one...

If I had a nickel for every time Mickey got sprayed with a cow's milk in a public domain black-and-white cartoon....I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

Three if you want to count Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in there too, watch Hungry Hobos, I have a total of three nickels just from 1928 so far. Obviously these guys were into some pretty weird stuff. But then again, that's coming from a guy who wrote literal dozens of stories about eggs being laid back in 2021, so what do I know?

I was always confused on which short counted as the true first mickey short, plane crazy or steamboat willie. As far as I knew, plane crazy came first. However, in recent years I found out that chronologically, Steamboat willie came first because it came out in public theatres while Plane crazy's silent version was only ever shown in test screenings.
@Cartooncroc Жыл бұрын
I would argue that plane crazy is the first since it was made before steamboat Willie they just added the sounds later on so take that how you will

@@CartooncrocThat's a fair reason. Plus, a test screening is still a screening.
