Thanks for your videos! Just discovered your channel. I'm recovering from RSV, Bronchitis, Sinus Infection, and Covid all within a month and a half. Performing pop style music in a show 6 nights a week. I'm a first tenor and have your legit tones and notes, but struggling to hit high B's of Queen's Don't Stop Me Now without wearing out. Any advice? I'm using I.E.M. as well.

Great info, and if I may be permitted to say, I find this a lot more obvious than when a 98 pound vocal couch tries to explain appoggio, and I'm just there going "I heard what she said, but I can't see what she's doing". Seeing this in something more akin to my own physiology really helps me to understand what I should be doing physically.

Hey @@joshualindsayvoicestudio6022 I wanted to say that you are doing a great job at proposing these warm up videos. I wondered could you maybe make another video with some more advance vocalizes for tenor? I'm already a professional opera tenor (leggero), but I can't find anything on the KZbin that really helps me advance further in training my very high notes and since I like your style of teaching I wondered if you could maybe make another video o forward me one you could recommend? thanks

@joshualindsayvoicestudio6022

Thanks for the comment! There are commonalities between all of the genres of singing, but there are also some major differences. Some great pop singers, like Whitney Houston or Adele use great breath support in the same way that opera singers do. An operatic sound is achieved by arching the soft palate whereas contemporary singers don't open too much in the back of the throat. I'll make a video about this to show the differences.

@@joshualindsayvoicestudio6022 Thank you for the nice reply. IMO most of the contemporary singers are using a microphone which makes all the breath support and such classical techniques not so important. So I think they can get away with so-called 'bad' technique, right? But I am not sure.

Isn't apogio about the sound you make to produce the opetatic sound? Breath exercises are great but i think it is often times easier to think about the type of sound and feeling you get from doing these things to really do them as a pasive mechanism in you body!

Thanks for the question! Here is an AI overview on Appoggo: Appoggio is a breathing technique for singers that involves coordinating the respiratory muscles and vocal folds to create a balanced, efficient vocal sound. The term comes from the Italian verb appoggiare, which means "to lean on" or "to support".

Why are you making singing an extreme gymnastics? Ridiculous exercise
@joshualindsayvoicestudio6022
@joshualindsayvoicestudio6022 28 күн бұрын
I’m glad you used the word gymnastics! In a sense, singers are vocal gymnasts. Pretty much anybody can learn to do a backflip on a trampoline by themselves without much training, but the real experts in gymnastics, like Simone Biles, work on ridiculous exercises all day long. That’s what makes the difference between an amateur and a pro. It’s the same in singing. Pretty much anybody can sing a song, but to achieve greatness in singing, one must train the voice with such vocal exercises for years and years.

@@joshualindsayvoicestudio6022 yeah I totally agree, as I am learning to sing for past 2 years all your words resonated accurately for me.. Exercises, hit and trial, always hitting the passagio to learn how to go past that, how much powerful should I sound in lower notes and how much forward in placement should I sound while hitting higher notes.. All these takes various forms of muscle contractions and air pressure, which indeed are colloquially termed as vocal exercises.. I have some shorts on my channel of me singing, they are old but as i have improved I can totally see where I went wrong and how to sustain notes while sounding good.. It indeed is a long journey.

@joshualindsayvoicestudio6022
@joshualindsayvoicestudio6022 Ай бұрын
That's a great question! These exercises will help you increase your breath longevity, even though you have asthma. Lung capacity is only part of the equation. Efficiency at the glottis plays a major factor in breath longevity. If you are efficient with the glottis where the aperture not abducted, but rather adducted, then less excess air will escape.

Indeed great technique to master. Watch out for some of the things: - Keep the throat volume the same throughout the dynamic change - Keep vibrato the same. This one is hard on piano - Keep mouth open on piano Basically there should not be a slightest change in the vocal position between forte and piano. Only because of our tendency to reduce the larynx volume and breath support when we go diminuendo, we need to exaggerate and increase it on piano to get rid of this habit.

I'm learning opera singing for three years now there times per week. You CAN and SHOULD control the speed of your vibrato to convey piece message(slower for more dramatic emotion for example). There are exercises for it. Vibrato slower than 5 oscillations per second may sound heavy or labored, and in some cases, it can be perceived as a sign of vocal fatigue or aging which is considered a defect and should be corrected. WIth old age vibrato may slow down due to many factors such as muscle weakness, reduced control, decreased flexibility, breath control decline, etc. In this case you can't really correct it. But in most cases you can. Vibrato faster than 7 oscillations per second may sound tense or nervous, and can sometimes be perceived as unnatural or forced. Also a defect and should be corrected. Vibrato speed is essentially the change of pitch that can be changed at will as you changing your regular notes. For the exercises I can recommend: 1. Sing with one note with metronome. Gradually decrease or increase metronome speed and try to match your vibrato with the metronome beats. You may first determine your current speed with metronome and then speed it up or slow down to sweet spot of 6 oscillations per second. 2. Sing one note and start from very large vibrato swing. As if you sing the 1/4 step higher that the actual pitch, and then 1/4 lower. Then you increase the vibrato speed gradually. It helps to develop the control. Aim for 5-7 oscillations per second.
@joshualindsayvoicestudio6022
@joshualindsayvoicestudio6022 Ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! You should make a video demonstrating how you increase and decrease the speed of the vibrato. I will then stand corrected!

That hour glass is interesting. I had found out instinctively too that while transitioning from chest to head one should not try harder for higher notes but instead almost "collapse the energy" on the transitioning point in some vague way until once head voice dominance found. Then can use more energy energy without however striving for broadness and loudness. It's here more to sustain the note. Well, at least for me and for now.

I am 85 years old and with the help of a voice coach my vocal range has stretched from D4 to at least E5. Singing dramatic tenor at C5 depends upon the approach to the sound. My sound is generally better than yours and when I sing On My Own (soprano) I hit the C5 almost exactly as famous soprano's. This is litter than a dramatic tenor.

I really feel uplifted and happy when I lock in to the note and crescENDOOOO but then backing off from it, I lose my entire energy and it's best described as my voice wanting to disappear and hide as quick as possible, and I guess that carries through to what energy I feel I have to donate to my voice. Argh. hope I get some tips. lol f/contralto I'm opting out of matching your exercises 😢
