We temporarily went back to The Good & the Beautiful History, and then we focused on Gather Round history units for a while, and now we are currently using Guest Hollow, and we LOVE Guest Hollow.

How can you do drivers ed online, dont you have to drive?
@homewithsarahjane
@homewithsarahjane 4 күн бұрын
In our state, if teens are between 15.5 and 17.5 years of age, they have to take a 30-hour class (online or in-person) in order to get a learner's permit. Once they get a learner's permit, then they have to drive a certain amount of hours supervised if they are still minors.

@@homewithsarahjane Not gonna lie we have adopted the entire Layers of Learning program this year for the Unit study hands on approach while pulling books from our existing Sonlight levels and I am on homeschool cloud nine this year! I actually planned a whole web of programs for months then started school after the Fourth of July. Two days into the new year I immediately pitched everything I had planned. It was working but it was lifeless. I felt like it was just a bunch of programs we needed to get done, I was being pulled in too many directions, there was a lack of excitement and interest and I was bored. I feverishly started from scratch trying to come up with a better solution quickly. After much searching I came across Layers of Learning again and they had redone the units and it’s was immediately a wonderful fit!! Their podcasts and Facebook group are very helpful. Some moms on the Facebook group recommended a week per unit instead of a subject a day or many subjects a day and it’s been magical. This week one thing we did was mummify a hotdog and my kids were giggling like crazy! We are doing a week of the history unit, a week of the science unit and a week of the geography unit then moving on to the next topic. I finally feel like it’s fun and creative, we can dig in as much as we want in that week, I am able to focus and really make it fun with a single topic. I also feel I can make it relevant and age appropriate for my teen as well who really loves being a part of family school. I feel like I can breathe, everything is getting covered but with how we learn best good books and unit studies. And we get done with the month unit in three weeks instead of a month!! We also are doing writers workshop as a family and everyone is learning all at once. We even made the Big Book of Learning they recommend for review and my kids are loving the trivia style review. It’s just a wonderful feeling when everyone is happy and we are in “that” flow.

@LearningPlantingGrowing it sounds like we have a similar homeschool style 😃!! When we first started homeschooling (what feels like a million years ago) not much was available, and I was piecing everything together and taking soooooo much time building what I couldn't find. I did go over to Layers of Learnings website and I do really like the Writers Workshop bundle. I feel like I might like the format and layout better than Jump In! I think I might switch😆.
@LearningPlantingGrowing
@LearningPlantingGrowing Ай бұрын
@@homewithsarahjane I think we have similar styles too! I really enjoy your channel! I don’t ever want to be negative but I and my oldest daughter hated jump in a few years ago. It was just boring to us. I am sure lots of people love it though! But Writers Workshop (I’m sure not for everyone) has brought aha moments and fun and all five of my kids ask to do it even my previously self proclaimed non writers lol. The podcasts and their KZbin videos really helped me understand how it is a really well thought out Language Arts. Anyway I wanted to let you know about it because the way you describe your homeschool reminds me of ours 😊

I started questioning Jump In once I took the time to really flip through it. I was sooooo sold on it from the online samples. I knew the layout wasn't my favorite, but thought I could get past that if Lydia liked it. When I showed Lydia Jump in, she showed zero interest.I just returned Jump In and ordered Writers Workshop & Word Work 😆.

We are planning to try Guest Hallow this year, but so far it is a big cost between purchasing pdf and All the books. You also mention that you didn’t want to have to piece things together and so far that is all I have done with this one. I wanted something more open and go, something I didn't have to put much thought into. My daughters really wanted to try Guest Hollow...so here I am piecing things together 😆. I do have to say that Guest Hollow is looking really amazing. So far, I have been able to get most books used/on sale or at Bookoutlet. I think my oldest will use Notgrass for American history in the following year.
