My step grandparents worked at the pike. She made sandwiches, he was a portrait sketch artist. By the 1930's they had saved enough money to pay cash for a home and double sized lot next to the Virginia county club in Long Beach.

Poly annuals are part of the history of a school with local and national implications. Poly is often considered one of the best schools in the country, not just for great athletes, but also an innovator in integration as a result of the Poly Interracial Coordinating Committee! Another example, the Jane Harnett commemorative in 1918 annual honors Long Beach's first historian, beloved teacher, and the losses of the horrors of the flu epidemic.

Mayor Sato was a member of our church in Long Beach back when I was a child in the 70s and 80s. Silverado United Methodist Church. She was very very kind to me and my family and used to tell me I reminded her of Sidney Poitier who was her favorite actor. Every year she used to take me to the circus when Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey would come to Long Beach. She always told me I was a gentleman because I used to open her doors for her. She told me to always stay on that path and I still do to this day. I am now 52 years old and I'm sad to hear of her passing. She is definitely a component of my upbringing and I thank her so much for that.

That’s a great historical photo. There was a lot going on in 1908. I would like to see more histrionic photos. Will there be a LB cemetery tour this year ?

My Dad was Ed Cousins. He had a custom 1932 Ford pickup and I spend much of my childhood at car shows rather than family picnics. I was the youngest of three children and usually the one chosen to crawl under the truck and polish the chrome. Everything was chrome back then. We competed against George Barris and his Copper Kart and Ala Cart and many times won. This lifestyle started for me in the middle 1950's and I remember fondly all the young men in the Renegades Car Club. My Dad was president for a year and I remember them meeting at our house on Tulane Avenue. He did take the truck to Lions Drag Strip a few times. His truck never won, it wasn't really meant for racing. My Dad drove the truck to and from work every day up and down Shell Hill to get there. Those are memories I will never forget. Although I have never owned a custom car, I have had a great appreciation for for every car I have owned and keep it spotless, inside and out. That's the way I was raised.
