I’m 38 (39 at the end of the end of the year). I tried a couch to 5k program last year and ran a 4-mile Thanksgiving race in around 51 minutes. I hadn’t planned on signing up for one this year, however as I am able to have Thanksgiving off again, I signed up for a 5k Turkey Trot in my town. I did a practice session (different course from another race my town does) and got around 47 minutes today as I only just started up again last week. I likely won’t do much better and do have to be careful because of my knees. My right hip also has started bothering me a bit, so I might end up having to walk more this time around during the race, depending.

Runners peak in their thirties yet 5k world records were broken by people in their early 20s
@Solpri16 күн бұрын
@MrNadav1995 endurance tends to peak in your 30s, but not necessarily raw speed. So there's usually a balance between the years it takes to build up solid endurance while maintaining peak raw speed before it begins to decline. Which is why you often see mid 30s athletes dominate at ultra distances or Ironman length in triathlon.
@MrNadav199516 күн бұрын
@@Solpri surely the opposite no? fastest runners are definitely younger 20s. But I also think its correlation because there arent many young athletes dedicating themselves to marathons compared to shorter distances.
@Solpri16 күн бұрын
@MrNadav1995 The opposite would be raw speed peaking in mid 30s while endurance peaking early 20s which I just don't think the data pans that out. It could be correlation, but I stand by my comment. It takes a long time to adapt to longer distances and being able to sustain them without injury. Tendons and ligaments are more the limiter here as they can take 3x or more as much time to adapt to a new load level as muscles which is one reason why you see people get injured when stacking on mileage too quickly. So for the long long stuff I'd say it just is a function of time which mostly can't be overcome by the overwhelming majority of people. 5ks... probably a little more squishy in terms of correlation. You have a much bigger field of young people (collegiate athletes) competing at the distance and life gets in the way as people are getting older so you have a lot of them leave where maybe if they spent another 10 years at the discipline they'd hit new peaks, but most people have no incentive to do that.
@MrNadav199510 күн бұрын
@@Solpri But again how come the best sprinters and long distance runners (up to 10k) all world records at were set by athletes in their early 20s? Plus if raw speed was to improve with time then usain bolt would have been even faster now.
@Solpri10 күн бұрын
@MrNadav1995 I think there's a miscommunication with my initial reply. I'm literally saying endurance gets better with time into your mid 30s and speed often doesn't. Meaning raw speed starts declining usually by mid to late 20s so that's why you see the shorter stuff's record usually set by 20 somethings. Raw power peaks in your 20s, endurance if worked on will peak mid 30s, records typically get set at the short stuff where the individuals personal fitness intersects at the best time for both in their life which is often mid to late 20s.

The team at UCSD deserves better than a coach who relies on borrowed credibility and superficial solutions. They deserve a leader who has experience in taking the ownership of their own successes and failures, someone who recognizes the distinct challenges of collegiate athletics as opposed where the coach is from the sheltered environments such as private club. The university setting demands integrity, strategy, and most importantly, a commitment to the athletes' well-being above all else. What’s particularly disheartening is the realization that Marko seems to navigate these challenges without genuine accountability or innovation. Instead of fostering an environment of growth and resilience, he resorts to coercing injured athletes back into competition or hastily replacing them with fresh recruits. This cycle not only jeopardizes the athletes’ long-term health but also perpetuates a culture devoid of respect and trust

Do you have a training plan for 2 months marathon I have run a Half 2:25
@SolpriАй бұрын
Sorry to say that generalized training plans aren't really my thing. If you aren't running at all currently - per the video I don't really advocate for jumping into a marathon under such short notice. If you've been running for a while and can do the half comfortably, it's possible that you could make it through the full without increasing mileage a ton as long as you are good with a run/walk type strategy AND fuel properly. Hard to say without digging down into more specifics with you though.

38 year old male. Ran my first 5k over the summer! I started working out in a men’s fitness group and played recreational soccer starting two months prior to that, and, prior to that, I was inconsistent with strength training and mild cardio, but never pushed myself for this distance and speed ever in my life. Time was 26:42. I understand that is a great time for a beginner runner, and I would consider myself one, but I had never been so proud of myself for merely competing in one, at the behest of my wife, and then surpassing my goal. I was praying for 29:59. The exhaustion was nothing felt before with 99-100% effort put into it. I’m thankful for the men’s group that reinvigorated the desire for fitness. And my wife for showing me a sport I now love more than all others.

Are running trainers actually worth or just a gimmick? Are normal sneakers ok?
@SolpriАй бұрын
Definitely not a gimmick. Depends on how much you're training if you want to get any, but if you're doing regular mileage I'd highly recommend it. Running shoes are built differently for different people so it's not a monolith, but you can search the channel for my running shoe recommendation videos. I fit shoes for runners, regular people and people with medical conditions full time for several years.

Ive just started running again at 28 after a 6 year gap (I was never a runner but did the odd one now and again among other hobbies). I've ran my route (just under 5k) in 25 mins 4 times now without training. The issue is that I live on a hill and the route barely stays flat. I have to walk the last 15 seconds per lap as it's too much! I'd guess I'd be closer to 23 mins if I had a decent track...

used to run a 5 1/2 minute mile in my late 20s and then I stopped running after I had kids and got married other than leisurely jogs. I am now 45 and just started training again for some local 5Ks I’m currently running an 8 1/2 minute mile. This is just starting out Training and with about 20 more pounds on me then I used to be …Am I too old to do this competitively? Obviously, I’m not shooting for the Olympics, but I would like to perhaps win some races. Do you have any examples of people in my age group that can do this seriously. I am not a marathon runner I prefer shorter distances.
@Solpri2 ай бұрын
I don't have personal examples of your exact situation, but a few anecdotes. I had a couple years "off" (was running 3 days a week, but couldn't do anything more than long run pace) because of a long term injury recovery. I'm back to consistent training and picking up speed again to be competitive in my age group at local stuff. I'm currently 35. Speedwise I'm currently about my best high school speed and about 30 pounds heavier than I was at that time. About 15 pounds heavier than my fastest speeds during college. At the other end of the spectrum, my father, who had never run long distance in his life, I got in to running in his late 60's. He often was competitive or winning his age group after a bit of training, into his 70's before a knee injury he never decided to get looked at had him step away from running. I can't tell you for sure what you'll do because "it depends" as always, but being patient and consistent to build your aerobic fitness back up will likely bring you more speed gains than you might imagine before you start doing any kind of speedwork.

As for time on feet, I. can’t help but wonder if there’s a place for walking either for time or distance in lieu of running miles for someone like me that wants to ensure they have the endurance to complete the 31 miles necessary on race day.

Wanting to break 20:00 in the next month. Best advice I can give as a beginner to other beginners or pre-beginners is don’t go for your PR every run train patient and put in miles and kilometers much above a 5k at slower paces but when you are timing, run until the wheels fall off when you feel the urge to stop keep going humans are so much more capable than our minds will trick us into thinking.
