There's been a resurgence of IIDX play happening among a group of friends on the East Coast, a few vet players and a few building up their skills. I vividly remember having a chat conversation with Ryan where I asked him about what's one thing I could do to improve faster. His response was to 'Start playing random. It'll get you used to hitting sh*tty notes'. I started playing Random from that day. Probably some of the best advice I could have been given because it increased my enjoyment of the game significantly. Thank you for this interview, DARQs!

Would a mini pinky extension be "cheating" for pinky scratching. I've been palm scratching for a a while but anything scratch heavy I just avert to one handed mode. I'm glad I can do one handed well enough because I can do held scratch notes and hit almost anything. 😂 Also yes learning new fingerings can help heaps. Especially in DP being able to adapt you hand to hit denser areas. Or being able to hit staircases without just sliding the hands over all the keys. 😅

I started in '04 and played every single day for years. Investing every scrap of free time into my progress. Around '08 I got really ill and was on permanent disability. Having nothing but free time for some reason I just didn't play much. The game still defined my personality though and I kept up with it from an outside perspective. When my health improved I got a full time job, this was around 2011. Now that I had way less free time I got back into the habit of devoting myself to improve. I only played at home on my RED and 3-16 cs. Round One opened in my area awhile back and I got even more into the game. Nowadays my free time is severely limited but I still grind when I don't have obligations. I see myself playing until my hands and wrists fail me. :)

I would LOVE a modern day re-telling of this video, and updates on how life's been going since this. I would gladly watch some crazy ass like 3 hour supercut of your life LOL. I come back to this video pretty frequently to keep myself motivated in my own journey, not just through IIDX, but through life. There's a lot of subtle life lessons in here about persistence and keeping true to yourself, that I feel like I catch a new one every re-watching lmao. Cheers, DARQs. No matter how old these videos are, I swear they're still as fresh as they were the day they came out.

just thought you should know these videos are still a great watch almost 8 full years later. as someone who only recently had the ability to get into IIDX proper, it's nice to have some easily digestible videos about pretty important subjects.

As a person who's been enjoying rhythm games since 2004: Even though I've never tried IIDX (Argentina's never had access IIDX cabs/network IIRC), I remember looking for IIDX related content a while back and thus found channel. Came for IIDX *knawledge* , stayed for your take on rhythm games as a whole plus your personality :D I really like the way you've explained every single aspect of the game and still remember your playstyles video haha I am happy of the progress you've made in your life and will forever cherish the videos you've posted ! :D :D :D and I will be lurking often to see what you upload :D Cheers from Argentina m8! may your keytaps be crisp and on time!

Hey Nick, there's a few channel where the players have dispersed to. Im not really active in most of them so I can't really gauge where the majority of players have ended up. I'd recommend asking in the IIDX international discord as someone could probably better answer your question there.

3:42 Yeah, and we all know how this ended up *cough* Mare Nectaris *cough* For me the turning point was Copula as well but in a different way. The music just wasn't my cup of tea to be honest. Yeah, you could still occasionally stumble upon some bangers like Dynamite or Outbreak (Refrain being my favourite by far, a Taka song...duh) but overall there weren't that many songs I liked playing on a regular basis compared to the previous installments. Like the 19th through 22nd included felt like things were getting exponentially better in terms of OST to then just suddenly drop to a rather mediocre OST of Copula and that was a huge turn off for me. Cannon Ballers was nothing special either and eventually I got tired of waiting for any major news about the game all together. Yeah, I still played some songs from 24 through 26 much later from time to time but then there was silence and when Bistrover got released there were still no Heroic Verse BMS conversions available and if I wanted to play 28th I had to make the conversions on my own... which I did (not keysounded, but hey, I could play some of the more popular songs almost as soon as the videos on KZbin started popping up). Same happened with CastHour but at this point it's just a hassle to even bother playing any new IIDX songs in the BMS environment. There is a chance the conversions might appear in the future but for now (the experience of having converted 10 charts in just one day to play the songs as soon as they appeared on KZbin is still stuck with me to this day) I'm not really that dedicated to go that far to play new songs at all. Too much of a hassle after a hard day's work :D P.S Glad to see you're doing fine! Really appreciate your opinion and perspective on IIDX :)

Hey nyannurs, what kind of co troller are you trying to install it into? Did you purchase the wires for it? You may need to ply off the quick connects to your switches and re-tighten them with pliers.

It's hard to explain to people how cool DDR was in the early 2000s. Everybody I knew who played it was super cool. I met a lot of people I am friends with to this day playing DDR and IIDX. I learned a lot about music too.

I've played IIDX since 2003. I found that for me even way back then, there was a point where going beyond SP 9th dan felt like a grind and I wasn't having as much fun. Often, I felt like I was mashing crazy patterns on a musical typewriter instead of playing music. I took a step back and started to play more casually and found that I enjoyed 14-key/doubles way more than 7-key as it feels more musically connected. I also really developed an appreciation for the 5-key series to mix things up. It's ancient by today's standards but it has a very different feel from IIDX. The timing in 5-key can be absolutely weird and inconsistent sometimes but charts and keysounds are extremely "direct" and it's usually very clear what each button is playing. In harder IIDX charts, especially with random, the floods of notes made it unclear to me sometimes just what each key was playing. So that being said, in IIDX I've found that I enjoyed playing charts in the 7-10 difficulty range more than the 11s and 12s. I can totally understand taking a step back from the game, especially if you were extremely involved with it. In my time with IIDX, I've often found myself taking extended breaks, exploring new hobbies and dealing with new responsibilities. But I still come back to the game after those breaks and end up enjoying it more as a result. I don't play the marathon sessions I used to back in those early days anymore, but occasionally playing a quick set of 3 songs on doubles after work feels just right.

I'm late as always with things going on, but I just wanted to say that those old discussion videos despite their age really helped me learn when I was starting out back in March. I don't really know if anyone's ever tried to make anything like them since. Not to say there aren't good tutorials or resources nowadays, just a lack of videos on these topics and I kinda wish that wasn't the case. Thanks for the vids, and hopefully I can catch a stream some day.

Do you still feel this "hitting the keys super hard" is as valid now that many arcades use lighter switches?
@darqs
@darqs 2 жыл бұрын
Given how things have shifted, i.e., the change in key weights, the increase in density etc it's partially true. PHN!X has spoken about this concept of "snapping" your fingers as opposed to smashing the keys. This apparently is the optimal approach to timing. I might potentially do a followup to discuss this further.

i like using both random and nonran, but it seems a bit unfair for scores to be saved since some random patterns can be easier than others it adds an element of luck, which is something that shouldn't be considered for scores imo
@xiayu27
@xiayu27 9 ай бұрын
This goes back to the point made in the video, where anyone else can get just as lucky by using random too. Which means they can get the same scores. Still unfair?
