For today's standards, what Strummer is saying in this video might seem vague and pretentious, but considering that he was saying these things in the 80s, when people got their information mainly through newspapers, radios, and, of course, music, it makes perfect sense to think that way. Even so, he is wrong to reduce music, as an art form and language, to a secondary role, especially when we consider how The Clash has so many catchy and radio-friendly songs.

I once read him say, for him personally, punk rock was a spiritual movement. It was more than just music to him. If I were to hazard an intuitive guess I'd say, cos he's more inclined towards expressing very explicitly, holding up a mirror to society type music, like he's searching for enlightenment or something. And to his mind, heavy metal wasnt illuminating at all. I reckon it just didnt resonate with his emotional/spiritual inclinations at that point in time anyway. He was too inteligent to hold dogmatic views tbh, he prob changed his opinions all the time despite not vibing with certain stuff.

The new band members look so uncomfortable. Topper and Mick were the musicians in the band, Joe was the lyricist, it was never going to work without them.

Mick and Topper were in charge of the musicality of The Clash. Strummer and Simonon in charge of the attitude. In Cut the Crap we had no musicality.

I think this is a very relevant point today, not by the point itself, but by its existence since music became an industry. Saying that the music of today is simplistic, bad or too commercial is ignoring that music has always been simplistic, bad and too commercial. Even at that time Joe Strummer was pointing out overproduction as an issue with artists, not caring much about live performances. It has always been this way, but it seems that music from yesterday was better due to pure survival bias. Simply put, bad music has always been made. It's just been washed away with time, along with being less noticeable because music wasn't as accessible as it is today.

Knowing what album they were about to make/were making(Cut the Crap) this interview makes Joe and Paul look stupid af. 😢 And they're not stupid af. They're brilliant. And is it just me or does Joe seem a bit on edge without Mick.

“You’ve got to do a lot of work to even do any of your own thinking.” That revelation epitomizes Joe for me. This thought-for the 16-year-old kid I was in ‘78-radically changed my life. White Riot. Gates of the West. Armageddon Time. Cheers to you, Joe.

i like lots of bands, i do think just like anything, when you start to take it too seriously, just like anything, you missed the point for most people. most people listen to what they like, and don't care if it is contrived, or the studio made it sound good, or the band is a sell out. i don't think most adults that are normally adjusted should really care that deeply about that stuff. just listen to what you like, and go raise your kids. people that care too much about the intentions of the band, or the industry of the band or whatever the thing is they are into, seem to not have time to take care of themselves and the ones they claim to love. just listen to what you like, and build your own life.

I dearly love Joe Strummer and The Clash, but almost every interview around Cut The Crap time he comes out with so many David Brent from The Office type statements. The other guys in the band, particularly Nick Sheppard, actually look a bit embarrassed. I get the impression even Joe didn't believe a lot of what he was saying around this time.

R.i.p Joe but you say I advise Americans don't buy rolling stones records as it contributes to the big huge concerts. What about when you reformed the original band minus topper, you ran on stage to a massive stage looking like Michael hutchence from inxs, mick Jones and Paul simonon all dolled up, you all loved the limelight really. The only one truly down to earth was TOPPER.
