The UN is still worthless. Executive Outcomes forced the rebels to the negotiating table decades ago with a little over 100 operators and had an exponentially more significant impact on the strategic environment than a 20,000 strong UN force. Worthless. Of course this was Sierra Leone and South Africa, however their combat effectiveness hasn’t ever improved.

It is crazy to me that people think you have to be SF or a ranger to actually be selected for the unit. Paul was a reg grunt and made it so that should tell you that it is mindset and preparedness.

It’s really sad that the administration at that time didn’t think it was necessary to provide armor and air support for these missions in Somalia. Lessons learned with the cost of precious lives. I do think Aspin should’ve been held accountable for such a disastrous decision.

Respect all these guys immensely, however, Dave's comments in the previous video of 147 gr 9mm failure from the 90's? Come on. Those were first gen (or maybe 2nd, after Miami) loads. The current HST 9mm 147 gr runs about 1,000 fps out the muzzle (not the six-hundred something fps in the incident Dave cited).

Regarding ammo testing, I'd like to see a lot more gel testing with REAL, calibrated ballistic gel, NOT "Clear Ballistics" brand ballistic goo. Clear Ballistics has made it easy for KZbinrs, etc. to go out and shoot things into their blocks, but it doesn't tell us much of anything that's useful. If the "testing" isn't with a standardized, calibrated, repeatable medium (what we call actually ballistic gelatin), it's not real testing.

I remember 160th pilot Mike Durant talking about how stupid it was that the Task Force had to set up shop in land of the country. The JSOC leadership originally requested to launch operations into Somalia from an aircraft carrier off the coast just out of eye sight. This way the Somali spotters couldn’t predict when forces would take off and pre warn HVTs that US Commandoes. The requests was denied for for reasons never explained to the Task Force. Just one of many bad limitations that was imposed on them.

They also wouldn’t allow Specter gunships and a variety of other tech/equipment that would’ve significantly changed the battlefield. Sort of like when the White House told the Air Force they couldn’t bomb key targets in and around Hanoi & Haiphong that would’ve grinded Northern manufacturing and logistics to a halt.

1:47:00 over the last 22 years, this is the biggest argument I've made that needs to change at the infantry level. Officers should not be anywhere near the battlefield in a leadership position. Never met a PL more knowledgeable than a PSGT, a Company CO more knowledgeable than a 1SGT or a BC more knowledgeable than CSM.

Holy cow, this is amazing. I've been wondering about his full perspective on this event. It'd be great to meet Mr. Howe someday and shake his hand. I've really enjoyed reading his blog posts throughout the years, and I've almost pulled the trigger on taking some CSAT classes before. My availability is almost nil though, due to my current job. :/ Edit: my original comment sounded a bit too insensitive and fanboyish in the context of the event. I do take this seriously.
