I think that techique its a liitle bit obsolete and can be replaced, phones nowadays support extremely detailed 3d objects, that technique was made when the phone were so slow at rendering and games like halo needed to be extremely optimized. I have a technique that does the same but in processing game data, it uses fourier series and transformation with senoidal waves that represent data. Since a wave can have millions of different frequences in it. Its a really helpfull tool to improve performance.
