Impressed that the author was able to pack so much into so few words...this type of economy of language allows for more audience engagement, thereby increasing the reach of the novel.

It's short for Solomon, his last name; but yes, Solo is appropriate.

Very interesting...good job panel. Tony didn't we, in SVG, hear about a Vincentian who was a member of Boysie's gang...so much so that this Vincentian's offspring is now in a similar enterprise... I'm prepared to guess that Doris is a buxom red woman...clear preference among Boysie's ilk😅

This is funny 😂...beautifully read... Reminder to Francine : difference between schooling and education; plus following CXC (CSEC & CAPE), there's specific critical thinking injected into curricula (yes, defending our hard wrought system which is still a work in progress ).

Love this Prologue! Listened twice. This novel...at least aspects of it...seems to be one of female subversion for the survival of one's truth. A certain panelist is pretty uncomfortable 😊

Karen Lord's breadth of reference has made this discussion so exciting and yes, hopeful. Caribbean writing has had these mixed genres for quite some time...not a great deal, but our region is deep as opposed to wide😊 Thanks for this !

I absolutely loved this interview. It reminded me of the times I spent in Professor Collins’ classroom many years ago as she told us stories and asked us about our impressions of the literature we were reading. ❤

I enjoyed this discussion. It seems that he is returning to the Haitian griots of the early 20 th century: Jean Price-Mars et al. Glad you asked the question child abuse. How do we remove the causes?

Sounds like Tony is a masochist. I agree with Paula. This novel echoes in many ways Emmelie prophète's LES VILLAGES DE DIEU.

This was such a lovely conversation a between all of you! I'm especially appreciative of the way violence against children (physical and emotional) and poverty were discussed - these were some of the more difficult scenes to translate because the just had to be done right. There's no mistake that Michel-Rolph Trouillot's Silencing the Past feels so linked to this novel, the two authors are part of the same family. Thanks so much for reading and for taking so much care in discussing Ti Tony and Franky's world.

16:34 There are plenty of black Bermudians who participate in its wealth. As of 2021, Bermuda has a per capita GDP of 114,000 USD, making it the richest black - majority nation on earth. It is governed by a Labour party majority whose 34 of 36 MPs are black. The current Premier is worth $47 million USD. Black Bermudians own land, own businesses, own property. Those who are impoverished have been sold out by their own Labour government who are content and complacent enough to let them remain so while enriching themselves.

Thanks for that. As we mentioned during our discussion of the novel, we're all quite ignorant of Bermuda’s history and current circumstances. The Drowned Forest is a wonderful novel - not just in terms of its artistic qualities, but also because it so skillfully invites us to learn more. Thanks for helping us along that journey. Paula.
