Tea is water with tannins from Camellia sinensis leaves. lol tannins are what give tea its color, they are what a scoby needs for food along with sugar.

I have a super passive easter egger hen who I use as 'training hen' with the pullets. I put her and the babies in a small pen to live together. She's such a sweet hen she's accepted them all in without fuss and the babies learn how to socialize with larger hens without being terrified. When I remove the fence and let the smaller pen rejoin the main flock the pecking order display is fast and brief.

We also have a sweet hen that we use sometimes too, she’s an Astrolorp and so gentle. We call her Mother Mariana.

There's a channel that covers low maintenance starter practice. Your starter should be quite mature if its your grandmas so you can honestly just keep a small amount in the fridge like I do. When I want to make bread, I take it out of the fridge, feed it with flour and water, rough equal weights, so I have about 1 cup or 1.5 cups of starter and let it sit in the jar loosely covered till it doubles in size. In the summer I do this in the morning and in winter I start the night before. I have had no issues with mold, never killed my starter, although it can be a little slower to rise the longer you go in between feeding but the fridge slows them down so at least they don't starve. If you get a layer of grey alcohol, you can stir it in or dump that excess liquid depending on how sour your taste is. Once my starter has reactivated on the counter, I dump the majority out into a bowl to make my bread and scrape down the sides of the jar to keep the remaining starter in a glob at the bottom of the jar and prevent mold. This method also cuts down on discards, I never discard!! Fermentation is scary because there's so many rules, but it's really not that strict once your cultures are mature and strong. Then neglect and mistakes don't hurt your ferment much😅

Great tips. I agree you shouldn't press really hard, (I used to do that when i was first starting out, & I cpuld barely get the seedling put when it came time 😂) but you should tamp down a little tiny bit, or pick the tray up a couple of inches & then drop on table to get it to settle a little, because once they get larger seedlings, & you spray with a watering can, instead of just a spray bottle, you'll see that the soil will drop about 1/2 an inch & your seedlings will not have any support when it settles & theyll be all falling over. Unless when you fill the tray you are being super careful to fill a little tiny bit at a time, then maybe its getting filled all they way... i giess it depends. But i know when i just grab handfulls & pour over, lots of small little sticks will usially orevent the entire cell from filling all the way up.
