Background fact: This was Frank Bruno's 4th shot at a world heavyweight championship (previous; 1986, 1989 and 1993), and it was his very last chanse as well. Bruno was a fan-favourite of the whole UK and Europe alike and while still in superb condition, his career was closing in to leave his best days behind. Oliver McCall had scored an MAJOR upset previous year in 1994 when he defeated future HOF legend Lennox Lewis and captured the WBC world HW title, a title he defended afterwards in a volutary title defense against 46 year legend Larry Holmes, barely winning it with on all cards and with Mike Tyson behind the next corner followed by the WBC mandatory Lennox Lewis. McCall was a dangerous foe, but very unbalanced and wrestled with his own demons, something that made his promoter Don King worry how long his champion would be able to hold on to the world title belt until his golden goose, "Iron" Mike Tyson could being the titles back - or risk losing it to rival promoter champions like Lennox Lewis or Evander Holyfield or Riddick Bowe. Don King believed another tune-up for his champion was in order and a balanced risk was a better option so Brittains Frank Bruno was a perfect opponent that could always sell out a arena with his popularity. HOWEVER... King required both McCall and Bruno to sign a contract before the fight could take stage that the winner of there bout, the man who would leave the ring with the WBC world HW title would by this contract be obligated to defend the WBC title in the ring against Tyson before ANY other opponent was to be - including WBC mandatory 1# Lennox Lewis, who earned the position after having won a WBC title eliminator contest over then 2# Lionel Butler back in May 1995. Bruno, who had all to win and nothing to lose accepted the term, knowing it was most likley his last chanse. The rest is history as they say. Frank Bruno defeated Oliver McCall and became finaly a World Heavyweight Champion after many years and many hard fights. Aftermath: After Tyson had both his tune-ups against Peter McNeally and Buster Mathis Jr (and declined again George Foreman), the WBC fight between Bruno vs. Tyson II was set up, but not without a battle in court. Lennox Lewis who was the rightfull challanger took them all to court and demanded he was the man who should fight Bruno, not Tyson who was not a mandatory challanger. However the WBC choose to honor the contract of King and award Tyson the challange, much to Lewis's understanding anger.
