One of the greatest full stop. Shane plummeting the depths of human misery, deprivation, humiliation and despair. And turning it into High Art. How, you may ask. A combination of an exclusive formal English education, and an inclusive informal Irish one. Bottled. The uilleann pipes, as directed by Shane, and his rendition of the final Old Main Drag, are.... You had to live, Shane, and you had to die, and you suffered in between. We're all the richer and the poorer for it. Thank you.

I sang this song to my dog Toby 1, while looking directly into his eyes as they pushed the needle in ending his life. I made a promise to Toby 2 that I wouldn't do that to him. I'd let him die a natural death. The other way seems like cheating. "Oh, the ship is in the harbor love, and you know I can't remain. For you know that it will be a long long time, before I see you again."

I love this band! Iam a swede, with a very "irish-looking"-face, and everytime iam listening to these irish songs, it gives me chills and i just wished i was someone iam not. I know its pathetic, but its the truth.

It's ok. Most of this band are English not Irish. At the end of the day the music is awesome

Fond memories of The Pogues playing this at a gig in London circa 1987. Thatcher was still in office, so "Maggie, I wish I'd never seen your face" drew wild cheers.

I can't say that they were underestimated. We (at least me and my mates) loved them across the pond in the U.S. of A.!! What absolute poetry.

I know one should never speak ill of the dead but I think MacGowan's singing is really awful. Rough, crude, out of time and out of tune. Can't hold a candle to Luke Kelly in my opinion.
