As a Brazilian with relatives of all colors and who grew up in a very mixed neighborhood, I´d like to make some clarifications: even though it was (and continues to be) a national shame the abolishment of slavery so late as 1888, only 5% of afro-brazilians were still slaves at that time. Second: the immigration of "white europeans" only took place in the South of Brazil, not in the whole country. Third: our most famous sculptor was a black man (XvIII century), our most famous writer was a black man (XIX Century). Our most famous poet was also a black man (XIX Century). One of the first Brazilian President, early XX Century, was a mulato. Our first music recorded in vinil was a samba played by black composers (beggining of XX Century). Imagine this in certain places in the "North"... Forth: there was no segregation among white and black in schools, public places, movie teathers, transportation, etc. During WWII, white and black Brazilian soldiers shared the same barracks (just see old images from urban areas in Brazil and from WWII). In summary: what we have in Brazil is more a "social racism", rather then a "blood racism". One huge challenge in Brazil now is to offer conditions for afro-descendents achieve the same opportunities (education and professional skills) that white people have. We do have racist people unfortunately (and they get in real trouble when caught), but not a systemic racism as you may find in some places of the world....

You’re right, Forró is a whole universe of its own and deserves many lectures. I wish it had the same international recognition as samba or bossa nova.

Obrigado, being a jazz musician I find Choro absolutely fascinating and really wanted to learn more about it and these 2 videos have been absolutely fantastic! One thing I'm super curious about is why Choro is called Choro, since it means to cry and this music doesn't have that feeling to it (at least to my ears).
@HenriqueEisenmann5 ай бұрын
This is a great question. Back in the 1880s, the way locals musicians in Brazil would perform European ballroom music was considered “overly-dramatic”, “crying” over those melodies. The name stuck to it. I do agree with you, however, that the genre evolved into a happy bouncy and exciting music.

I also love that the African ceremonial singing sounds microtonal at times. This makes me think of how mechanized our popular music singing here in the US has become (not sure about how things are going in Brazilian pop music these days) with the advent of autotune and pitch 'correction'...as well as the use of programs to make the drums map perfectly to a grid. The music you're sharing here sounds so vibrant and expressive.
@HenriqueEisenmann8 ай бұрын
Well, unfortunately commercial pop has taken over the country, so it’s not that different than the US. You can only find the authentic genres in very specific cultural pockets - which are shrinking by the hour😢
@Jasper_the_Cat8 ай бұрын
Oh this is so great! As an American who is very interested in Brazilian music and culture, this is very helpful. For another popular example of Ijexá, I was thinking of the recording of "Filhos de Ghandi" sung by Clara Nunes? I love that song! Anyhow, I'm learning so much - thank you!
@HenriqueEisenmann8 ай бұрын
YES, "Filhos de Gandhi" is actually the name of an Afro-Brazilian collective in Bahia who celebrates Ioruba culture and the many Afro-Brazilian rhythms, including Ijexá. I also love that Clara Nunes tune.

Can we play the Villa Lobos Choros with this rythm in mind? Or is it wrong?
@HenriqueEisenmann8 ай бұрын
Although many classically trained musicians wouldn't use these accents in their performance, I believe you should definitely use these rhythms to inform your performance and make it more authentic. Villa-Lobos would have liked it!
