OK but I would be wary of a tin-can boiler at any pressure. One writer many years ago pointed out that steam from even a half-pint of water can be lethal. I would be inclined to do the same with seamless copper tube so please be careful!

No, but if the airplane is on straight floats, they sometimes land on the grass. Then a truck has to pick it up.

Thanks alot for your videos, I've been researching alot of steam engines and made many many sketches of one, which is inspired of yours, and I'm going to try to make it power my bike! I know it's a bit ambitious, but I'm doing it the following way: I'm making a 2-cilinder double acting engine, very similair to yours, with a bore size of 14 mm and a stroke of 15mm. Then I use it to power a small wooden wheel, roughly 20 times smaller than the wheel of the bike, and that wooden wheel will run on the bikes front wheel with a reduction of 20:1, which, according to my mediocre calculations, should give me the torque of an e-bike, but probably the speed of a pensioned snail. As a boiler I'm either using a very large soda can, plenty of water hold and is rated at 6 bars (I'll use it at like 2-3 bars) or a steel pipe that I'll have to make into a boiler. I started on the engine today, I finally found some time. I made one of the pistons, made it from a brass block and it took ages to transform it in my drillpress, but it's now round and sanded to 2500 grid. I tested it in the cilinder, and it slides pretty nicely inside of it and is very airtight. When I blow into the cilinder it shoots out and with a bit more 2500 grid sandpaper work it should fit like a glove and slide like a sleigh. Have precisly designed a piston valve, thanks to you I know how to make it in the drillpress, I have one question however. I have my pistonrod, which is square to the piston, but sadly not entirely centered. Do you think this will be very limiting to the engines performance, or could I just make the hole where it goes through the coverplate off center aswell and have the piston unable to rotate. If it is very bothering I could cut it off, since it's a tight fit and soldered into the piston, and just drill a new hole where the old piece becomes a part of the brass. my excuses for the long message, I'm very excited to finally have my own steam engine soon. Thanks for all the inspiration! Cheers, Thijs

I've finished one cilinder and valce combo, works beautifully even using just air from my lungs.
@thijsrikkerink6333 Жыл бұрын
Alright just got this video recommended again, I made two 20mm bore cilinders the same way I made the one above. At first I had a slightly flimsy crankshaft which broke as soon as I tried to power the bike with it, so I made a new one with 8mm brass plate and I'm pretty sure the only way to break that one is by nuking it. It's very sturdily built. The valve system is very similair to yours, but it exhausts to atmosphere. I made a boiler out of a steel tube which I welded shut and added a firetube, gas burner and all kinds of fittings like a manometer, watergauge, safety valve, funnel ect. It also has a nice sheet steel firebox underneath it and its volume is 1 litre. I made a simple displacement lubricator. All of this on an MDF platform that held to the bike with 2 bits of steel to the front wheel axle and one bolt to the steering fork. I'm now just waiting for the gas tap to arrive so I can fire up the boiler on gas for the first time, already tested it with a metho burner but that didn't work very well. The engine runs beautiful on compressed air and had plenty of torque, so I hope the boiler can keep up with it. One addition I want to make are babcock for more efficient heat transfer if the firetube alone doesn't suffice. Your videos helped me alot to make this setup without a machine shop, and without it I probably would've had a way harder time doing so. Cheers for that.

Thank you for a lovely video. I am very interested in the small needle valve on top of your boiler - do you have any information on this? Is this a Viking 1/8" needle valve? Also, any info on the safety valve would be great!
@ch300fnqi3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, the main valve at the top of the boiler is indeed a 1/8 needle valve, but I don't know what brand. They are sold at all the local hardware store. As for the pressure release valve, it is home made, using a 1/8 brass elbow and I machined a needle that sits on the existing shoulder inside, with a small spring. I guess I should have shown this in more details. But unless you have a really big burner, it's pretty hard to overpressure this engine. I hope this inspires you into building something similar!

Excellent work! Your tutorials on steam engines are the best. If I may ask you, do you think it would be possible to mount this engine on a four-wheel platform and connect the main axle to the two rear wheels of the platform in order to make it run? And if so, would the flywheel be necessary?

the crank shaft need a big puli
@ch300fnqi4 жыл бұрын
Well as you can see it doesn't need a pulley to run as it is a double acting twin cylinder. Therefore there is constant torque on the crank, as opposed to the single cylinders. However, I've installed one on my recent engines because it looks much nicer with a flywheel.
@prashantayachit46494 жыл бұрын

@ch300fnqi4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Since it is a twin cylinder and double acting, there is constant torque on the crankshaft and therefore, it doesn't require a flywheel, unlike a single cylinder that needs the momentum of the flywheel to keep going. However, if you look at some of my more recent engines, I added a flywheel, it just looks nicer and it was a challenge to cast one.

Haha yeah there is a tower at 1:35 but as long as you know it's there, it's no big deal. When it comes to flap settings, about 10 degrees on base, 25 on final unless you're coming in hot. Speed is about 85-90 mph on final, 70 over "the numbers", flaring at 60.
